Preface
Introduction
PrimeCode is an enterprise Software Configuration Management (SCM) tool
for managing changes to software applications through the entire software
life cycle across multiple platforms. It is executable object centric, unlike
other SCM solutions which are simply source code centric. PrimeCode goes
beyond simple source code version management. It manages the relationship
between all software application Components, from acquisition through
development, testing and production.

PrimeCode can be enhanced with advanced features such as:

u Automated Change Policy (ACP)
u Code Editor Interface (CEI)
u Parallel Application Development (PAD)
u Enterprise Software Distribution (ESD)
u Cross-Platform Configuration Management (XCM).

Purpose of the QuickStart

The QuickStart has been written to familiarize you with the Windows
Interface to PrimeCode. It starts with the PC client installation, then gives
you a tour of the PrimeCode Windows Interface, describing how it is
organized, the standard features available throughout, and how certain
Windows features have been used.

The QuickStart does not explain PrimeCode software management

functions. You can refer to the appropriate PrimeCode manual for this type
of detailed information. The QuickStart is intended only to familiarize you
with the user interface.

The QuickStart will not teach you how to use your PC or Windows. It
assumes that you have a basic, working knowledge of Microsoft Windows
95/98 or NT. For information about Windows 95/98 or NT concepts and
functionality, you should refer to your Microsoft Windows documentation.

This document has been written for anyone who will be using the PrimeCode
Windows Interface. It has been designed to give you just enough information
to get you started. You can then take advantage of Tool Tips, Status Bar
Help and the On-line Help facility.

1
Communication Requirements
PrimeCode provides support for RTC (Remote Transaction Call), RSC
(Remote Server Call) or Piccolo to communicate with the Tandem.

RTC
u RTC client software is automatically installed into the
PrimeCode directory by the PrimeCode Setup program.

RSC
u You should have already installed the RSC software.
u The RSC directory must be in the Path.
u The 16-bit Windows version of RSC (RSCW.DLL) must be
used on Windows 95/98. You can use the RSCTESTW
program to confirm RSC is working.
u The 32-bit version of RSC (RSCNT.DLL) is required on NT
machines. PrimeCode does not automatically initiate an
RSCTCP process on the PC. We recommend that you add a
shortcut to RSCTCP.EXE in your Windows Startup folder.
Otherwise you will need to restart RSCTCP manually each
time you reboot. You can use the RSCTEST program to
confirm RSC is working.

Running Setup
Before starting the Setup, check that the following steps have been
performed:
u PrimeCode servers should have already been installed on the
Tandem.
u RTC, RSC, or Piccolo communications software should also
have already been installed on the Tandem.
u Uninstall the previously-installed version of PrimeCode.
u If you have run PrimeCode since the last time you started
Windows, there may be parts of the program still loaded in
memory. To clear out these processes, either reboot or use
Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del on Windows 95) and end the
PrimeCode task.
u From the Windows Start menu, select Settings/Control
Panel/Add Remove programs.
u Select PrimeCode from the list, then click the Add/Remove
button.
u If asked if it is OK to remove shared files, click Remove All.
u If you are installing PrimeCode on an NT machine, log on as
a user with administrative privileges.

2
1. Insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive.
The Setup window will display automatically, allowing you to choose from
the following options:
u Install PrimeCode
u Explore the CD
u Install Acrobat
u Exit.

2. Click on Install PrimeCode.

The Setup program will guide you through the installation, prompting you
for information as needed.

Setup will determine if all the necessary Microsoft Windows prerequisite

components are installed on your computer and, if necessary, will install
Microsoft HTMLHelp files, Microsoft DCOM95, and Microsoft Data
Access Components (MDAC).

ë On an NT machine, you must be logged on as a user with administrator

privileges, or the MDAC installation will fail.

ë If a reboot proves necessary, you should restart the Setup program after the
reboot has completed.

You will be prompted for information about the communications software

you are using. Setup will install the COMM.DLL appropriate for that
software (e.g RTC or RSC). COMM.DLL will be installed in the same
directory you select for PrimeCode.

Setup will offer to edit your Path environmental variable to ensure that the
PrimeCode (and if appropriate, RSC) directories are in your Path.

ë You may need to reboot at the end of the Setup if Autoexec.bat was edited.
3. Start PrimeCode.
Double-click on the PrimeCode desktop icon or choose
PrimeCode from the Start/Programs Menu.

ë If you see the message “Run-time error 440, Automation error”, then either
COMM.DLL is missing or not in your Path. Make sure your Path points only to the
most recently-installed COMM.DLL.

when you choose an operation from a Menu. They are floating windows
which can be moved around, tiled, cascaded, minimized or resized. The
example below shows the Navigator, Catalog Explorer and User Profile
windows:

There are standard features used in the Operations windows. Some of these
features are shown on the Extract Component Operation window described
on the next page.

14
Navigator
The Navigator is displayed after logging into PrimeCode and provides a high
level graphical view of PrimeCode functions.

Associated task-level operations can be accessed by clicking on any of the

functions:
Kernel Policy
Develop Administer
Package Configure

Navigator Menus provide you with a direct entry point to specific tasks if
you know which Component you want to work on. Selecting an operation
from the Menu will display a Select Component window which requires you
to identify the Component you want to work on. Clicking on the Select
Component button will retrieve the required Component information and
display the appropriate Operation window for the selected task. If no
Component selection is needed to perform the task (such as Add), the
Operation window will be displayed immediately. Catalog, Release,
Location and UserChange Explorers can also be accessed from the
corresponding Navigator function Menu.

15
Explorer Windows Features
PrimeCode has four types of Explorers which have been designed to allow
you to easily manage specific Component types within the Catalog:
u Catalog Explorer - a complete view of the entire Catalog.
u Release Explorer - a restricted view of the Releases Group.
u Location Explorer - a restricted view of the Locations Group.
u UserChange Explorer - a restricted view of the UserChange
Group.

There are many standard features common to all Explorers (such as the
Toolbar, and Right-Click Menus) which are explained in this section. Some
features are specific to each type of Explorer and are explained later in this
section.

Explorer windows are accessible from the Navigator, the Main window
Toolbar or Functions Menu.

16
The Explorer windows are divided into two sides: on the left, a view of all
Catalog Items and on the right, a list of the Contents of the selected Catalog
Item. The Catalog Items are displayed in a hierarchical tree view. The
Contents of any of the Catalog Items will be displayed on the right when
selected.

ë Favorite Paths will appear in the Main window’s Menu Bar when a Catalog,
Release or Location Explorer has the focus. See User Options - Favorite Paths.

All of the Explorers have some things in common which we will explain
next.

Resizing Explorer Windows

You can resize both the active window and the columns within. To resize the
active window, move the mouse to the top, corners, sides or bottom of the
window until the resize arrow (↔) appears, then drag to the size you need.
To resize the columns, move the mouse on the bar between the Catalog
Items and Contents or between each of the headings, then drag to the right or
left.

Navigation
To display the contents of a Group, click on a Group in the Catalog Items
view, or double-click on a Group in the Contents view. After a Group’s
contents are displayed, it will have a plus sign (+), a minus sign (-) or
nothing at the left of the Group icon in the Catalog Items view.
u + means the Group contains other Groups and/or objects.
u - means the Subgroups are already displayed.
u nothing means the Group doesn’t contain any Subgroups.

ë Double-click on a component listed in the Contents view to display detailed

information about that component.

17
Explorer Toolbar
Properties - display the details of the selected item.

Large Icon View - display the contents as large icons.

Small Icon View - display the contents as small icons.

List View - display the contents as an alphabetical list.

Details View - display the contents as a detailed list.

Move up in the Catalog by one level and display the contents

at that level.

Refresh - update the displayed Catalog information based on

the timestamp of the selected item. If a more recent version
exists in the Catalog the displayed list will be updated as
follows:

u If an item is selected in the Contents list (right side):

refreshes the list displayed in Contents.
u If an item is selected in the Catalog Items list (left side):
refreshes the selected item, all levels above, and items at the
same level that are displayed in the Catalog Items list.

The Path of the Components displayed in the Contents.

Drop-Down List - display a list of all the Catalog Paths

previously visited during the current session.

Go To - takes you to the Path and Component specified in the

Path field (either a selection from the Drop-Down list or
typed directly into the Path field). Right-click on this button
to save or load a PathSet. See User Options - Favorite Paths
later in this manual.

18
ë Wildcards (*) can be used to limit the Components displayed in the Contents side
of the Explorer. To display only Components starting with “SRC” in the Group
\SOURCES, type: \SOURCES\SRC*. Use “?” to replace any single character
except the backslash “\”. Use square brackets and a range [a-z] to display
Components in the specified range, or use tilde and square brackets ~[a-z] to
display Components not contained in that range.

Right-Click Menus
Right-clicking on any Component or Group will display a pop-up
hierarchical Menu showing all the relevant actions that can be performed on
the selected item. Right-clicking on the white space of the Contents view
displays the Add Menu item.

19
Catalog Explorer
The Catalog Explorer gives a complete view of the entire Catalog, allowing
you to perform tasks on individual Components.

Explorer Menus are context dependent. Menus in the Catalog Explorer are
related to a Component and general Catalog activities. Although you can list
Releases, Locations and UserChanges, you can only see information about
them at a Component level, and you can only perform Component-level
tasks.

For example, displaying Detail on a Release from the Catalog Explorer will
only display Component detail, not Release-specific detail.

To display Release detail or perform a Release-related task, you should use

the Release Explorer. The same rules apply for Locations and UserChanges.

Icons are used throughout the Explorers to denote a particular Component

type. These icons are shown next to the individual Components in the list. In
cases where the Component type is also an Explorer type, such as Locations,
Releases and UserChanges, the same icon is used next to the Component and
on the Explorer icon. The icons used in the Catalog Explorer are described
next.

Release Explorer
The Release Explorer gives you a restricted view of the Releases Group
which allows you to easily manage Releases. Operations within the Release
Explorer are considered to be Release oriented. However, you can perform
tasks on Components within a Release as though you were using the Catalog
Explorer. The Menus for these Component types will be the same.

Icons are used throughout the Explorers to denote a particular Component

cases where the Component type is also an Explorer type, such as Locations,
Releases and UserChanges, the same icon is used next to the Component and
on the Explorer icon.

Drag and Drop Operations
Introduction
PrimeCode fully supports Drag and Drop operations for many key features
that relate to Linking and Deploy functionality. Drag and Drop operations
take place in the Explorer windows. The various Linking and Deploy tasks
are performed either within the same Explorer window, between Explorer
windows of the same type, between different types of Explorers or between
an Explorer and Operation window.

This section of the manual first explains the general rules for Drag and Drop,
then describes how the Drag and Drop operation works for each PrimeCode
feature.

Performing a Drag and Drop Operation

Begin by opening the required Explorer window(s), select a Component
from the Contents side of the window and drag it to a Component in the
other Explorer window, or to a Component in the Catalog Items side of the
same window.

Based on the type of Component selected and the type of Explorers you are
working with, you will be prompted for verification that you want to perform
a specific task. After verification you may get a Menu of options, or be
prompted for any information necessary to perform the task.

U You can only drag FROM the Contents side of an Explorer window.
Drag and Drop a Single Component
Click on the selected Component and hold the mouse button down. When
you move the mouse the drag icon will appear (the icon will correspond to
the type of Component you have selected). Drag the Component by moving
the mouse over the Component you wish to Link/Deploy to. When it is
highlighted, release the mouse button.

26
Drag and Drop Multiple Components
There are two ways to select multiple Components: contiguous and
noncontiguous. Contiguous Components are a selection of Components
which follow one after the other in a list. Noncontiguous Components are a
selection of Components in no specific order, i.e. that are not grouped in a
list one after the other.
Contiguous

Click on a Component, hold the Shift key down, click on the last Component
in the list you wish to select, and release the Shift key. The list of
Components is now highlighted. Click on the selected list and drag the
Components to the destination Component involved in the Drag and Drop
operation. Drop the list by releasing the mouse button on that Component.
Noncontiguous

Click on a Component, hold the Ctrl key down, click on each Component
you wish to select and release the Ctrl key. The set is now highlighted. Click
on the set and drag the Components to the destination Component involved
in the Drag and Drop operation. Drop the set by releasing the mouse button
on that Component.

U Drag and Drop with multiple Components is not applicable for all operations....
you’ll get an error when it’s not appropriate to use multiples.

User Options
Favorite Paths
PrimeCode allows you to save the list of Paths you have visited in a given
session. The Favorite Paths Menu appears on the Main window’s Menu Bar
when any of the Explorer windows have focus. Favorite Paths can also be
accessed on the Explorer window by right-clicking on the “Go To” button
next to the Path field.
u To Save your current set of Paths, select Save PathSet from
the Favorite Paths Menu. The Select PathSet window will
appear. Type a name for the PathSet and click OK. The
Saved PathSet name will appear on the list at the top of the
window.
u To Load a previously-saved PathSet, select Load PathSet
from the Favorite Paths Menu. The Select PathSet window
will appear. Select the PathSet you want to load from the list,
and click OK.
u To Edit a previously-saved PathSet, select it from the list and
click Edit. The saved PathSet will be displayed in a Notepad
window for you to edit. Close the Notepad window. If any
changes are detected, you will be asked if you want to save
the changes. Click Yes to save.
u To Delete a previously-saved PathSet, select it from the list,
and click Delete.

ë Saved PathSets are displayed by name on the Favorite Paths Menu, providing a
convenient way to select a PathSet to be reloaded.

ë PathSets are saved locally and are not tied to the UserID that saves them.
ë PathSets are tied to a specific Catalog and Explorer type. For example, you can’t
load a Location Explorer PathSet into a Release Explorer, or load a PathSet from
one Catalog to another. To guarantee this, the PathSet list presented at any time
is context sensitive. You will only see the PathSets appropriate for the current
Explorer in the current Catalog.

30
WorkSpace
A WorkSpace is a set of windows that are currently open. Saving a
WorkSpace stores information about which windows are open, their position
and their content. You give each saved WorkSpace a name, which allows
you to quickly and easily revert to a previously-used set of windows and
their content, simply by selecting the WorkSpace name from a Menu.
u To Save your WorkSpace, select Save WorkSpace from the
File Menu on the Main window Menu Bar. A list of currently
open windows and Paths will be displayed. Verify that the list
is correct and click Yes to save. The Select WorkSpace
window is displayed. Name the WorkSpace in the “Save
WorkSpace as” field, or overwrite an existing WorkSpace by
selecting it from the list, then click OK.

ë Due to the context sensitive/dependent nature of the Right-Click Menus and Drag
and Drop operations, it is sometimes not possible to reload certain combinations
of windows/contents out of context. PrimeCode will detect this type of situation
when you try to save the WorkSpace. The Save Verification list will show which
windows cannot be saved and give an explanation. You can then choose whether
or not to proceed.

ë A WorkSpace is saved locally and is not tied to the UserID that saved it.
u To Load a saved WorkSpace, select Load WorkSpace from
the File Menu, then select the WorkSpace from the displayed
list. You can also simply select it by name directly from the
File Menu.
u To Delete a WorkSpace, select it from the list and click
Delete.

User Profiles
User Profiles can be configured to provide additional information about a
user, restrict user access, and set user defaults. Refer to the PrimeCode/Core
manual for detailed information about this feature.

The User Profile window can be selected from the Functions Menu under
Administer. The window has two tabs allowing you to select either the
General or Search Subvolumes panes which are described later. You can
select each option pane by clicking on the appropriate tab. After you have
made your changes click Apply or OK. Click Cancel at any time if you don’t
want to apply the changes you selected.
General Options

Login Restrictions

Allows the Administrator to control the period of time when a certain user
can log in to PrimeCode. The Administrator can also prevent that user from
logging in at all. From here, a user’s Login privileges can be suspended or
activated, and the Login timeout can be set.

User Preferences

Allows the Administrator to tailor which screen PrimeCode will start with,
as well as specify the Release and Component Paths.

32
Search Subvolume Options

Here is the User Profile window showing the Search Subvolumes pane. It is
used to specify the search subvolumes you will be using:

ë User Profiles are optional, but if used can be secured to allow Add/Modify/Delete
privileges. Contact your Security or System Administrator for information about
how this feature is being used at your site.

Options Window
The Options window can be displayed from the View Menu on the Main
window Menu Bar. The window has two tabs allowing you to select either
the General or Communications pane which are described later. You can
select each option pane by clicking on the appropriate tab. After you have
made your changes, click Apply or OK. Click Cancel at any time if you
don’t want to apply the changes you selected.

33
General Options

Session Inactivity Lock

PrimeCode provides a configurable Session Inactivity Lock which requires

you to log in again, if there has been no activity for a specified period of
time. From this window, you can change the length of time for the timeout,
within the limits set in your User Profile. For example, if your User Profile
specifies a timeout value of 30 minutes, you can change this value to 1-30
minutes, but can’t change it to anything greater than 30 minutes. When the
timeout occurs, a Login window will be displayed. Simply enter your
password and click Login.

ë PrimeCode does not require the use of User Profiles. Each site can choose
if/how they want to implement this feature. User Profiles can be secured for
add/modify/delete privileges. The Session Inactivity Lock is activated only if you
have set a timeout in the Option window or if you have a User Profile.
Configuration of these options will be site specific. Contact your Security or
System Administrator to determine how this feature has been implemented at
your site. See the PrimeCode/Core manual for detailed information on User
Profiles.

Preferred Text Editor

PrimeCode allows you to choose the text editor you wish to use to display
the output from Browse, Merge and Scan commands if they are directed to a
PC disk file. Either type the Path of the editor you wish to use, or click the
Browse button to navigate to the editor on your hard drive.

34
Communications Options

This window allows you to view or modify the communications options that
were originally configured during the installation. Changes made will not
take place until you click either the Apply or OK button. You can click
Cancel at any time, and changes you have made will not be applied or saved.
Refer to the PrimeCode Installation manual for detailed information on
PrimeCode communications options, or contact your System Administrator
for site-specific information.

ë At times the Apply and OK buttons will disappear when you clear the information
in the Process Name or Communicate via Expand Node fields. This is because
you must press the appropriate Add or Modify buttons next to the Process Name
or Comm Node fields to register the changes you have just made in these fields.

35
Security and Licensing
Security is enforced by graying out (deactivating) Menu items and data
fields that are denied by either the node’s license or your User Task Security
Profile. Both a valid license and the appropriate task security permissions
must be in place for you to be able to get to a function.

If the node does not have:

u a Develop license - all items (including Explorers) are grayed
out under the Functions and Navigator Develop Menus.
u a Package license - all items under the Package Menu are
grayed out.
u a Distribute license - all items under the Deploy Menu are
grayed out.
u an Acquire license - all items under the Deploy Menu are
grayed out.
u an ACP license - all items related to Approvals and Task
Security under the Configure and Policy Menus are grayed
out.

ë If you need access to any task that is grayed out, contact your Security or System
Administrator.
