Feature Article: Rainbow Kitten Surprise

Injecting a dose of mystery, raspy, sing your heart out to the beat of their songs. In a

morphine faze, they got their name, Rainbow Kitten Surprise (RKS). Using a play of the pagan

symbol, they chose to ‘stay grounded motherfucka’. Inspired by some of pop culture’s biggest

celebrities, the greatest even, Lana Del Ray, Frank Ocean, and Kings of Leon, the band featured

Ela Melo and Darrick “Bozzy” Keller, they’ve created an alternative indie feel to music that

makes you feel things that you may have never felt before. Bringing along Ethan Goodpaster,

Jess Haney, and Charlie Holt, they began one of the greatest bands of all time.

Their first album, Seven, was independently released but then re-recorded with their new

record label, Split Rail Records. It is a label run by students at their college, Appalachian State

University. Known for their harmonies, instrumentation, and lyrics, Rainbow Kitten Surprise

tells stories within their writing. Understanding what others have gone through, it is easy to

relate to the things they sing about and feel as if you are not alone. By themselves, Rainbow

Kitten Surprise is building an empire of like-minded people who feel in a different way than

others do. With their lyrical poetry, they give us a purpose, a way of life, showing us that we

aren’t alone and that it is okay to be hurt or sad or angry or really any emotion that we may feel

the need to keep inside. Rainbow Kitten Surprise is a scream your heart out kind of band and will

continue making contagious and exhilarating music to relate to those who may feel different.

Passion is shown throughout the lyrics, they aren’t afraid to say the words meant to be unspoken.
