125 Die as Tear Gas Triggers Crush at Indonesia Soccer Match

At least, there were 125 people died in Indonesian soccer stadium disaster. This was because
police firing tear gas triggered all people inside the stadium making a panicked and run to the
exit. Before the tragedy, there was a chaotic situation caused by the fans of Arema (Aremania)
who didn’t accept that Arema as a home team lost (the scores are 3 for Persebaya and 2 for
Arema). They didn’t accept that because after 23 years always became a winner home match
against Persebaya and this time was defeated. They started to throw the player with bottle
and went down to the field. East Java police chief, Nico Afinta said that polices had taken
preventive action to stop them, but fans were attacking officers, becoming anarchist, and
burning vehicles. The situation was out of control, so the police started firing tear gas. Many
victims fell because of lack of breath and they couldn’t see clearly due to tear gas, so they
were trampled upon. For this tragedy, amnesty international called on Indonesian authorities
for an investigation into the use of tear gas by stewards to disperse crowds at football matches.
It was one of the deadliest disasters ever at a sporting event and Indonesian President Joko
Widodo says he hopes this is the last soccer tragedy in this country.
