WHO IS CONSUMER
Any individual who purchases
products or services for his
personal use and not for
manufacturing or resale is called
a consumer. A consumer is one
who is the decision-maker
whether or not to buy an item at
the store or someone who is
influenced by advertisement and
marketing.

Consumer refers to any person


who purchases some goods for a
consideration that has been
either paid or promised to pay or
partly paid and partly promised.
CONSUMER RIGHTS

A consumer has access to the


following rights, courtesy of
the Consumer Protection Act
of 1986, and they are as
follows:
•The right to be informed.
•The right to safety.
•The right to choose.
•The right to be heard.
•The right to consumer
education and related
information.
•The right to seek redressal.
Consumer Responsibilities
•Responsibility to be aware – A
consumer has to be mindful of the
safety and quality of products and
services before purchasing.
•Responsibility to think
independently– Consumer should be
well concerned about what they
want and need and therefore make
independent choices.
•Responsibility to speak out- Buyer
should be fearless to speak out their
grievances and tell traders what they
exactly want
•Responsibility to complain- It’s
consumer responsibility to express
and file a complaint about their
dissatisfaction with goods or
services in a sincere and fair
manner.
•Responsibility to be an Ethical
Consumer- They should be fair and
not engage themselves with any
deceptive practice
Consumer awareness
•Lack of awareness of consumer
rights among buyers.
•Improper and inadequate monitoring
of rules and regulations.
•Individual purchase quantity is quite
small.
•Consumers are scattered over large
areas.
•Lack of awareness among
consumers.
•Greed of businessperson

Government measures
Consumer Protection Measures have
been initiated all over India. The
measures are also in the form of Acts
that are reformed and restructured
from time to time.
1.The Consumer Protection Act,
1986
This Act protects the rights of the
consumers and makes them aware
of their rights as a consumer. There
are three-tier redressal forums to
protect the rights of the consumer.
2.Indian Contract Act, 1972
The Indian Contract Act lays down
the conditions that need to be
fulfilled by the parties who contract
in an agreement. This act regulates
the buyers by keeping a legal check
on their promise to sell authentic
products to the seller. This Act
protects the interest of both parties.
It takes care that the contract is not
breached, else respective
remuneration has to be paid for
such breach.
3.The Sales of Goods Act, 1930
This protects the rights of the
consumers in case the products
received by them are sub-standard.
4.The Prevention of Food
Adulteration Act, 1954
The act confirms the purity of the
food items and thereby ensures the
health of the consumers.
5.The Trade Marks Act, 1999
This Act protects the consumers
from the false marks which could
mislead them to consume the
product, and thus cheat on them by
serving less qualified products.
Role of consumer courts
in safeguarding rights of
consumers:

1. Consumer courts play an


important role in ensuring justice to
the consumers.
2. They settle consumer disputes by
various means including ensuring
compensation for the consumers.
3. The consumer courts are able to
create confidence in the consumers
and bring about a qualitative change
in their lives.
4. Consumer courts offer Simple
procedures, Fast assurance of
justice,less court expenses
Conclusion

•The government come in


existence under 1986. It gives six
basic rights to consumer.
•The main purpose is to make
sure that consumer get product
and service worth their money.
•Consumer have the authority to
be protect against marketing
price fix goods and service which
are harmful for their life and
property.
•Right to give information about
the quantity, quality, purity,
potency, and standard of goods
and service is come under
the consumer right.
•Buying product on reasonable
price is also duty of consumer.
