Explain how a person can know the difference between Truth and Deception (2 John 1-13)
among those who claim to be followers of Jesus. Please provide Scripture references [chapter and
verse(s)] supporting your thoughts. Your explanation must be between 250-500 words in length.

the errors of the false teachers; the danger to which they expose the churches

What makes it necessary to obey the Father's commandment is the appearance of many deceivers who
do not confess Jesus Christ come in the flesh. Let the recipients take care of themselves, so that the
elder will not lose the fruit of his labor and they will have the reward of their faithfulness (7, 8).

Do not receive those who do not bring the true doctrine

Whoever does not keep the doctrine of Christ is a stranger to God. Whoever comes to you without this
doctrine, do not receive him into your home. To greet him would be to participate in the evil he does
(9-11).

The elder expresses the hope that he will soon visit those to whom he is writing

He would still have much to say to them; he does not want to write to them. He plans to visit them
soon. The children of their sister, the chosen one, greet them (12, 13).
The received text (capitals) carries: so that we do not lose the fruit of our work, but that we receive a
full reward, all referring thus John, to the apostles.

The fruit of their labor, their reward, are the souls brought to the Savior.

Codex Sinaiticus, A have everywhere the second person: "so that you do not lose the fruit of your
labor", etc. bringing the whole thought to the readers of the epistle.

Finally, in the text of B. which we adopt with most of the editors, the apostle, while placing the
responsibility for a relapse on the readers, expresses the fear that they might lose the fruit of his work,
the graces which they could gather from it, the eternal salvation of their soul.

This is a strong expression of the principle already professed by the apostle (1 John 2:23).

The doctrine of Christ is therefore not the teaching of Jesus Christ, but the doctrine concerning Jesus
Christ, his person and his work.

In the beginning of the verse, the received text says: "Whoever transgresses and does not remain in the
doctrine".
John wrote: (Codex Sinaiticus, B, A) whoever goes further, beyond, outside the doctrine of Christ, the
simple Gospel, imagining that he has surpassed it by his speculations, that one does not have God;
while he who abides in the doctrine, has the Father, because he has the Son.
