QUIZ NO. 3 2ND SEMESTER

1. Imagine that you are in Tuguegarao City at the moment. You always witness the solid waste
collection strategy used by the city, by loading the wastes in a dump truck. In your own opinion,
is this way/method effective, I mean the best way in tuguegarao city solid waste collection. If
not, what would be the better way/method that the city would utilized on its solid collection
strategy?
Solid waste management is intended to safeguard the environment while also improving city
conditions. Cities and their citizens can be harmed by poor solid waste management. Despite
the different innovative technologies for solid waste disposal that are emerging, landfilling
remains the most popular solution. Due to the gases generated, the formation and closure of
landfills could represent a risk to ground water and air quality. Public health may be jeopardized
unless proper maintenance and management is maintained over an extended period of time. As
a result, a safer and more sustainable method may be to reduce the number of landfills built
and ensure their long-term viability so that viable land is not taken for trash disposal. As a result,
it is vital to divert waste from landfills by reducing and recycling it.

Although there appears to be widespread knowledge of the necessity of recycling throughout

the city, not all towns, particularly in unincorporated regions, have curbside pickup for single
and multi-family residences. In general, businesses in the city do not have a requirement or
incentive to recycle, other from customer appeal, which does not always compel them to do so.
Several solid waste specialists in the area who we polled mentioned open/illegal dumping and
burning of unsuitable garbage. Although these experts are in consensus that landfilling waste is
the most economical disposal method, they also agree that more recycling and resource
reduction should be attained to reduce the continuous need for landfills. That said, not all
counties have recycling ordinances, the main reasons being political opposition and lack of
funding for personnel to propose, monitor and enforce regulations. The various counties and
municipalities will have to collaborate to reach a comprehensive solution that addresses solid
waste disposal.
