CODE 109 - BIOSTATISTICS

DIRECTIONS: In not less than 300 words, describe at least three (3) application of biostatistics to DOH
research or policy approach on the COVID-19 outbreak in the Philippines. Expound each application.

Application of Biostatistics to DOH research policy approach on the COVID-19 outbreak in the Philippines

1. Biostatistics was utilized to determine the most effective approach to use resources to address the
COVID-19 outbreaks within the population.

 The aim of epidemic control is to stop the spread of the disease throughout the population as
well as to determine the best technique to treat an affected person. The professionals within
the Department of Health who are working on, developing, and recommending protection
mechanisms and resources in relation to outbreaks utilize biostatistics information and findings.
It is for this reason that the information and findings from biostatistics can be applied to direct
public health and other healthcare professionals on how to approach the COVID-19 outbreaks.
According to Beric-Stojsic (2021), when balancing the efficacy of the scientific process to provide
resolutions with the reality of fear and uncertainties, biostatistics is actually useful in analyzing
and understanding outbreaks.

2. Biostatistics plays a significant role in how the Department of Health interprets and predicts various
health outcomes as well as the course of outbreaks and pandemics, which certainly influences the
decision-making on public health.

 The use of biostatistics to determine the course of the pandemic guides the Department of
Health in making an effective decision toward addressing the COVID-19 outbreaks. Biostatistics
serves as the foundation of the healthcare system and directs all of the department's various
actions and decisions about the prevention and management of the COVID-19 outbreaks that
affect people locally and worldwide. Furthermore, the research or policy approach of the DOH is
based upon the data from the use of biostatistics which can effectively contribute to deciding
what is best to address the concerns of the population to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

3. Biostatistics provides relevant details on the health, illness, and death of human populations, which
is considered significant to address the COVID-19 outbreaks within the population.

 The relevant data and models provided by biostatistics contribute significantly to the
Department of Health in terms of monitoring the number of current cases as well as the deaths
reported. The relevant data and specific details inform the department on what policies must be
implemented to address the current situation. It also encourages the department to perform
necessary research to discover the root cause of the outbreaks and discover further information
about the COVID-19 virus. The data provided by the use of biostatistics is also really helpful for
the general public because it raises public awareness for the country to help reduce the spread
of the virus.
