Characteristics of Conurbations
● Conurbation is a constantly growing area that excludes ribbon development.
● The cities that make up this region experience fast population growth as well as industrial
and technical development.
● A conurbation has a high population density; it has a substantially larger population than
adjacent towns.
● A wide variety of industries operate in a conurbation, relying on the conurbation labor
reserves, excellent transportation, and so on.

and Chiba. This area has largest
metropolitan economy in the world

The surface area of the city metropolis comes to approximately 2,187.66 km2 (844.66
square miles). However, the city expands outwards to approximately 13,572 km2 (5,240
square miles).
According to a 2016 estimate of Tokyo's population, the metropolis is now home to 13.5
million people, or 9,262,046 in all of the 23 wards.
This area is home to around 30% of Japan’s total population.
