1. A Head of Department is authorised by the Council to grant sick
leave to an appointee upon application, up to the amount which attracts full pay and allowances as stated in the relevant clause governing sick leave and invaliding in the applicable Terms of Service/Conditions of Service.
2. Applications for sick leave for five days or more must be
accompanied by a certificate signed by a registered medical practitioner (Medical Certificate) on which should be stated the specific period of sick leave recommended. For applications for sick leave for four days or less, the Head of a Department may, at his discretion, also require an appointee to produce a Medical Certificate.
3. A Head of Department can notify an appointee that until further
notice, further periods of sick leave may be granted only on the basis of Medical Certificates signed by medical practitioners of the University Health Service. Absences not supported by Medical Certificates issued by the University Health Service will be treated as absence without leave.
4. Applications which will bring the amount of sick leave granted up
to, or approaching, the requisite amount for invoking the provisions for convening a medical board, as stated in the relevant clause in the applicable Terms of Service, shall be referred to Head of the Human Resource Section, who may arrange for a medical board to give advice to the Council.
5. For appointees appointed on Terms of Service I (19th and
subsequent editions)/Conditions of Service for Professoriate Staff/Conditions of Service for Professoriate Staff (Clinical Medical Staff)/Conditions of Service for Academic-Related Staff, a Head of Department who considers that an appointee is physically or mentally unfit to perform his or her duties, may request the Head of the Human Resource Section to seek advice from a Medical Board, notwithstanding the fact that the period(s) of sick leave granted falls below that stated in Regulation 4 above.
