1 Basic structure: the chassis: ACTIVITY 1 TEMPLATE

The F24 Kit car’s chassis is made of steel. The aim of this activity is to find out why, and
look for material alternatives.

Find out about the following topics. Use as much space as you need to explain your
answer:
a) Properties of the steel: mechanical properties. Weight vs resistance to mechanical
forces.
The ratio weight vs resistance, is not the best . there are other materials that are
better , but they have others characteristic , sometimes is better and other times is
worse

b) Price of the steel: is it easily available in the market?

there is a lot of steel in the planet and it is cheap, so there are other materials better
than steel

c) What is the price related to similar materials usually used to make vehicle
structures?

they can use aluminium , because I think that is cheaper than steel

d) Is it easy to weld? How is it manufactured?

steel is a good material for working , because is easy to shape and put , aluminium is
difficult to put, and carbon fiber is difficult to work with it because it weight a lot and
it is difficult to shape
e) Find out about 2 similar materials usually used for chassis manufacturing.
