Course Description:
Types of production systems, forecasting techniques, capacity planning, and facility layout.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):

After completing this course, students should be able to:
1. Explain the differences between the types of production systems, the differences
between quantitative and qualitative forecasting methods and the design
requirements for warehouses (KU1).
2. Discuss the reasons for making in-house and outsourcing (KU10).
3. Differentiate between the requirements and applications of the different types of
material handling equipment (KU3).
4. Estimate a forecasted demand value using linear regression (IS2).
5. Conduct make-or-buy analysis for deciding whether a part will be produced internally
or purchased from outside supplier (IS7).
6. Evaluate the space requirements for production and material handling equipment
(IS8).
7. Design a feasible and efficient layout of machines and workstations for production
systems including cell formation and assembly line balancing and facility location (IS4
and IS5).

Software and computational tools:

Microsoft Excel will be often used to solve some problems related to facilities planning.

In addition, students should have a good engineering calculator (TI-36X Pro

Engineering/Scientific Calculator or the HP 35S Scientific Calculator) to use in quizzes and
exams.

The above Google Classroom web site will be used in this course to provide lecture notes,
handouts, assignments, announcements, grades and other information.
Please follow the above link and accept the invitation to join this classroom site or
alternatively, send the instructor an email at tabdelmaguid@eng.cu.edu.eg to receive
that link.

Email Policy:
Please include in the Subject line the course code MDP408 and a concise and clear
statement of purpose; otherwise it may be deleted, along with spam messages and
messages potentially containing viruses.

Lectures
PowerPoint presentations will be used during lectures and will be posted on the course
website. Other details will be given on the board. You should read the material before
lectures so that you have some idea of what will be discussed, even if you don't
understand everything. Please ask questions as I go along. Most of our time will be spent
covering more difficult material rather than things you can understand easily. Class
lectures definitely will not replace reading the textbook.

Course Requirements:
• Homework and in-class/online assignments will be provided every week in the
tutorial session and/or in the lecture. Students are expected to complete the
assignments and turn them in on the due dates. No late assignments will be
accepted.
• One midterm examination and a Final examination.
• Four research assignments on different topics related to the course.

3
Paper Assignment Format:
• Put names, date, and assignment number in the first sheet.
• Use only one side of each sheet.
• Clearly identify the problem(s) being investigated and cite all references used in
your research.
• Do not fold papers lengthwise. Please turn in papers flat and stapled.

Violation of any of the above formatting rules will result in losing grades.

Exams:
All exams are closed book and notes. Only one hand-written sheet is allowed in the
midterm and final exams, given that the student’s name and ID are written on top of
both sides of the sheet.

Research Assignments:
• Research assignments are where in-depth knowledge is gained by searching the
literature on different topics related to the subjects of this course.
• They have to be done in teams of maximum four students.
• All team members must participate and know exactly what has been presented.
• Teams will be asked to present their findings to their colleagues in some selected
research assignments.
• Each student will be examined individually on the submitted material in an
interview with the instructor.

Class Participation:
The student is expected to read the material to be discussed before the class meeting.
Each student is responsible for the material discussed and the instructions given in class
even if he or she is absent. Always bring your textbook/lecture notes and calculator to
class and your laptop only when requested by the instructor. Active student
participation in class discussions is encouraged. Come to class prepared by reading the
material assigned as explained in the course calendar in the last page of this syllabus.

Grading:

Homework assignments 5
In-class/online assignments 5
Research assignments 15
Midterm 15
Final Exam 85

Grading Policy
Grading policies and requirements identified in this syllabus are non-negotiable and will
be followed in this course with all students held to an identical standard.

4
Classroom Ethics:
The following rules will be strictly applied to all students attending this course:
1) If you arrive late to the classroom and find the door closed, please do not open it
and do not enter.
2) In case of emergency, if you must leave the classroom during the lecture, please
leave quietly and close the classroom door behind you and do not come back.
3) No foods are allowed in the classroom. you may have a bottle of water or a cup
of coffee/tea or a bottle of juice.
4) Tablets or laptops are not allowed in the classroom unless permitted by the
instructor for some tutorials on using software related to this course only.
5) Mobile phones must be turned off during the lecture and kept hidden in your
pocket or purse. You are not allowed to write messages, check emails, browse
the internet or play games during the lecture.
6) You are not allowed to speak during the lecture unless permitted by the
instructor. If you have a question, or would like to participate by answering a
question, you should raise your hand first and wait until permitted by the
instructor.

Academic Dishonesty:
Academic dishonesty is not tolerated at FECU and is subject to academic discipline
ranging from a mark of zero on the exam or assignment/exam to dismissal from the
University.
Students are expected to do their own work on assignments and exams. Although
studying in groups is encouraged, outright copying of another person’s work is unethical
and unprofessional.
