Tuffley Primary School in Scotland has recently won the Green School of the

school joined in. Withtheir teachers’ help, younger students built a special garden

said Moira Douglas, a mother of two students at the school. Some of the older
students set up a small farm with some chickens. They grew their own vegetables
in the schoolgarden and sold them to parents and local people. ‘The children

Pandas disturbed by earthquake

Last month there was a large earthquake in the Sichuan area in China. The earthquake upset
the pandas at the famous Wolong reserve, which was right at the centre of the earthquake
and is badly damaged.

Eight of the young animals have now arrived at Beijing zoo, and the zoo keepers there are
giving them lots of attention to help them recover.

Conservationists hope their arrival at the zoo will make people more aware of the damage
to their habitat and encourage people to give donations to the reserve. It could take ten or
twenty years for the reserve to recover. The earthquake destroyed many buildings and large
areas of bamboo, and a new road is now unusable. The earthquake also killed four staff
members and left a fifth person seriously ill in hospital.

The keepers at the reserve were really worried when they saw the pandas after the
earthquake. They were very frightened and they didn’t want to eat. It has taken a while, but
now their appetite is back to normal and they are eating 10–18 kg of bamboo a day, plus
milk, carrots, apples and steamed buns.

Six pandas escaped during the earthquake and, sadly, two of them are still missing. They
may now be dead, but keepers hope they have escaped into the wild and that they will
return to the reserve, because they are very close to their keepers.

PassportsPeople have used passports for years to show their identity when they travel from
country to country. At the start of the 20th century, countries started to agree standards
(=rules) for passports. Now countries use guidelines from the International Civil Aviation
Organisation. For example, the information in a passport is usually in English or French
and the language of the country. Many countries have used machine-readable passports
since the 1980s. These passports have two lines of characters; numbers, letters and
symbols; which a machine can read. This information includes the person’s name,
nationality, date of birth, passport number, etc. They are quicker to read, so people can
move through the airport more easily. In recent years, some countries have started to use
biometric passports. A biometric passport contains a computer chip. As well as personal
information, this chip has information about the person's appearance. This can be a digital
image of the person's face, of their eyes and their fingerprint. Biometric passports are safer
because only the correct person can use the passport.
