The Tiger King’ is a story about the transience of life and power. It is a satire on the conduct
of the people in power. It is found that most of the time, the rulers are not interested and
bothered about working for public welfare. Rather, they spend their time in foolish things.
Most of the people, who surround these powerful people, are also interested in taking
advantage of the proximity for their own welfare.

JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE EARTH

Tishani talks about her journey to Antarctica which is described as the coldest, driest and
windiest continent in the world and how the impact of human activities can be studied by
visiting it. We understand the threat of global warming how we can actually do something
to act and solve the environmental problems.

ON THE FACE OF IT

The lesson 'On the Face of It' aptly depicts the loneliness and sense of
alienation experienced by people on account of their disability. The actual pain and
inconvenience caused by the disabilities is often much less than the sense of alienation felt
by the disabled persons.

The story ‘Going Places’ revolves around the protagonist Sophie, who in her adolescence
fantasises and daydreams about an Irish football player Danny Casey. Their family is not
well off and they all know about the harsh realities of life and how to cope with it but
Sophie does not understand. She continuously makes concocted stories and lives in her
own world.

INDIGO
“I shall not fear anyone on Earth. - I shall fear only God"- Mahatma Gandhi .The story
'Indigo' highlights the unequal economic system that existed during colonial British rule. It
resulted in Indian peasants suffering, while the British planters exploited them. It also
highlights the importance of Gandhi's decision to take up their case, which exposed the
unjust system.

POETS AND PANCAKES

The story “Poets and Pancakes” is a passage from Asokamitran's book “My Years with
Boss”. Asokamitran talks about his days at the Gemini Studio. The Gemini Studio produced
many films, which impacted the aspect of Indian life. Here, Asokamitran talks about a
trendy make-up brand named Pancake.

MEMORIES OF CHILDHOD

The lesson ‘Memories of Childhood’ is a portrayal of two autographical accounts. One by


American Indian woman and the second by a Tamil dalit writer. Both stories highlight
women’s oppression, class barriers, racism, discrimination, and exploitation that tend to
pull them down.

Both the stories advocate the statement that the seeds of rebellion are sown early in life.
Children may be young and innocent but they cannot tolerate injustice if they are
discriminated.
