Number Bases

Year 9
MATHEMATICS GUIDELINES/KEYS

• Punctuality (to class and to submission of work).

• One person talks at a time.
• Raise your hand up when you want to speak .
• Ask or answer at least one question in the class before the end of
• the week.
• Have your writing materials (pen, pencils, ruler, notebooks,
• textbooks, workbook) ready at all times before the class.
• Be focused, reduce distraction.

Number bases
• Base 10 numbers are called denary or decimal systems and are
usually written without ten.
• We can also count in other bases such as base two, base three, etc.
• Base two digits are 0 and 1.
• Base three digits are 0, 1 and 2.
• Base four digits are 0, 1, 2, and 3.
• Guess the digits for bases five, six, seven, eight, nine.
Converting numbers from base 10 to other
bases

To convert numbers in base 10 to other bases:

1. Divide the base 10 number by the given base
2. Continue dividing until zero is obtained
3. Write down the remainder at every stage
4. Then read the remainder upward to obtain the required answer.
Activity 1

Convert the numbers

in base ten to base six
a) 43
b) 803
Activity 2

Convert these numbers

in base ten to octa1
number
a) 768
b) 609
Activity 3

Convert these numbers

in base ten to base two
a) 90
b) 53
Activity 4

Convert these
numbers in base ten
to base 7
a) 76
b) 405
Converting from other bases to base ten

To convert from other bases to base ten,

1) Give the numbers a place value
2) Expand in the power of the base
3) Simplify your expansion
4) Write down the answer
Activity 5

Convert each of the following

to the base given:
a) 107𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡
b) 231𝑓𝑖𝑣𝑒
c) 532𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑒
d) 1001𝑡𝑤𝑜
e) 1211𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑒𝑒
Binary number system
Base two number system are called binary because of its application
in computers for instance
• 0 stands for OFF
• 1 stands for ON
Base two numbers can be converted to base ten and other bases as
we have discussed above.
Note:
• To convert from one base to another other than ten;
1. Convert from the given base to base ten by expansion method
2. Then convert from base ten to the required base using division
as usual.

subtraction, multiplication and division in
other bases exactly the same way as base ten.
• Note:
• To add in base two:
• 𝟏 + 𝟏 = 𝟏𝟎
•𝟏 + 𝟎 = 𝟏
•𝟎 + 𝟏 = 𝟏
