The peak is between the border of Nepal and the Chinese region of Tibet. In Tibet, the peak is known as Chomolungma, or Qomolangma, meaning “Goddess Mother of the World”. ! Mount Everest rises up to a height of more than 29,000 feet (8,840 meters). The oxygen content at that height is thin, the temperatures are very cold, and the winds are extraordinarily strong. The conditions near the top are not suitable for any plant, animal or human life to survive. Huge ice sheets called glaciers cover the slopes down to the base of the mountain. Some Tibetan-speaking people live in the valleys below the mountain. The best known are the Sherpas. They live in villages at altitudes up to about 14,000 feet (4,300 meters). The Sherpas are known for their strength and endurance at high altitudes. These people lead climbing trips in the Himalayas. Mount Everest has long been a challenge to mountaineers. Early attempts to reach the summit began in the 1920s. They failed largely because of the harsh conditions ‘on the mountain. The first successful climb took place in 1953. Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Nepalese Sherpa guide, were the first ones to reach the top. Since then, there have been a number of successful climbs. 16. Jonathan sat in the back seat, clutching Goggle, his stuffed owl, and looking at the scenery: majestic mountains intertwined with blue streams, and more tree species than he ever knew existed. “Do you want to see too?” he asked, tipping Goggle’s head through the open window. As they passed a little bridge, the car hit a bump and Goggle went flying out the window. “Daddy! | lost Goggle!” Jonathan cried. The car stopped on the shoulder, and he raced out just in time to see Goggle disappear out of view in the back of a canoe travelling down the stream. Carlos heard a muffled thud behind him. “Hey, there”, he said, picking up the ‘owl from the bottom of his canoe and looking up to see where it came from. He thought he could see a young boy standing on the bridge, looking down, but there was no way he could go back against the current. Not having any use for a stuffed owl, he tossed it on the riverbank. ‘An eagle flying overhead saw something white down below. It looked like a tasty mouse, so it swooped down and picked it up with its talons. The eagle soon realized the animal was not edible and dropped it on a pine tree, where it remained until a soft breeze made it topple on the walking path below. A little while later, the family came hiking down the path. “Goggle!” exclaimed Jonathan. “How did you get here?” Goggle couldn’t answer, of course. He just stared at Jonathan with his big, yellow, goggly eyes. -Annie McMahon 4 r 21. What is the passage about? A. Jonathan's childhood ~ B. Goggle’s travels C. Carlos’ canoe D.
