talk about situations that are hypothetical. There is a possibility that the
condition will be fulfilled.

If + past simple, would/wouldn't + verb.

If I lived in a big city, I would go out more often.

0 – facts that are generally true

I condition possible to fulfill

II condition in theory possible to fulfill

III condition not possible to fulfill (too late)

What would you do if you were the princess?

What would you do if you were a young man?

If I were the princess, I would help a young man find the door with a bride.

If I were the princess, I would show him the door with the tiger.

If I were the princess, I would not help him at all.

If I were the princess, I would run away with him before the trial.

If I were a young man, I would trust the princess to show me the right door.

If I were a young man, I would close my eyes and choose the door on my own.
