Introduction
Entrepreneurs engage in a unique relationship with the intellectual property law process.
They sustain intellectual property law because the purpose of said law is to protect inventions,
and inventions are created by entrepreneurs. Similarly, entrepreneurs are sustained by IP law
Thus, understanding the IP process is the logical next step in my study of entrepreneurship with
regards to biomedical science and devices. As such, this year in ISM, I am studying the patent
process and how it pertains to me as a biomedical entrepreneur. Because of this, I believe the
best course of action for my original work is to write and file a provisional patent application for
summary, descriptions of the invention, background information, drawings, and a list of claims.
To submit my provisional patent application (PPA), I must first compose all of these components.
As I am interested in completing this process entirely on my own, I will need to create the
drawings, write the claims, and write the other sections based on my research of the prior art.
To create this patent application, I need to have knowledge of several topics. Some of
these topics are things that I will have to learn through future research and some are things that I

already know. First of all, I need to conduct more in depth research of the prior art. This will be
integral to formulating the background information section of my PPA, but it will also be helpful
in understanding how to write my claims so that they are clearly different from other patents. I
will also have to learn how to create drawings of my invention, which means I will have to
practice drawing. I am not particularly skilled in the field of hand-drafting, so I will be using
CAD software like Autodesk Inventor/Fusion 360. Other skills, like creating my claims, are a bit
more confusing, in the sense that they are written in a very particular way, and I am not too
To create the rest of my patent application, I will have to conduct more research on the
specifics of each component but also look at examples from existing patents. Through my past
research, I already understand these components, though not all at the same level. I believe that
looking at examples of these documents will help me significantly in understanding how they are
meant to be written.

will have to create documents, I will need the software to make them. I will also have to make
drawings of my product. Therefore, I will need to use CAD software in addition to the word
processing software.
Procedures
To create my product, I will first have to conduct more research on the prior art so that I
can formulate my claims as best as possible. Then, I need to conduct further research on the
stylistic language used to write patents, so that I can match that as best as possible. Having

completed this research, I will have to actually create my PPA and all of its components.
Conducting these steps will allow me to create an effective provisional patent application that is
In the process of creating my first PPA, I will be using multiple higher-order thinking
skills. The most evident of these is synthesis, where learners create some sort of product. By
creating a patent application, I am harnessing the information I have learned to create a new
product. However, I am not directly translating the information I have learned through research
into a product. Rather, I have to first analyze this information to determine how to best apply it to
my particular situation. Only then can I actually create a product. I am also using the skill of
intellectual property protection from the government. The choices I make in my PPA are
reflective of the evaluation I have performed on my analysis to decide the position I want to take.
Any sort of application is an argument because one has to make choices, which means one has to
make an argument why one choice is superior. Using these 3 higher-order thinking skills will
allow me to create a logical, justifiable patent application that best reflects my knowledge.

entrepreneur. Without protection, my ideas are unlikely to be commercially successful, and then
they cannot be turned into reality. Learning patenting is important, because if my ideas are only
able to exist in my head, they cannot help people in real life. So I’m writing a patent application
for a simple reason: to ensure that I can achieve my goal of helping as many people as possible.

Results
My goal in writing a provisional patent application was to gain experience with regard to
the world of patents. In that sense, I have written a provisional patent application with all of the
needs is a drawing and a specification. It does not need claims, anything referring to the prior art,
or any of the detailed descriptions that I have written. As such, while I will only be filing a
provisional patent application, I have familiarized myself with many of the components of a
nonprovisional one.

acquainted with the patent process. This will help me be more successful in bringing my ideas to
the market and to the people who need them in the future, Therefore, I believe that my original

patent pending upon my application being received by the USPTO. I believe that my invention
could be successful in the future, and this provides me a platform to build a company from. I
intend to file a few more provisional applications in the new year, because I have thought of
many invention ideas, and I feel that they could be developed into inventions worthy of patents.
And with this skill developed, I want to focus more next semester on the sales/marketing and
product development parts of engineering entrepreneurship. That was what I studied last year,
and I found it to be more interesting. I am not trying to become a patent attorney, so I do not
