Broadwater Library – December 2022

What have we learned so far?

Kindergarten – First
• How to find the right library book
• How to check out a library book and bring it back on time.
• With guidance, how to make meaning for their own lives from well-written stories.
• How to express their understandings through art and activities
Second - Third
• How to find the right library book using the colored dots on the book spines. They learn
their own lexile level and search within that range.
• With guidance, how to make meaning for their own lives from well-written stories.
• How to express their understandings through art and activities.
Fourth – Fifth
• How to find library books by genre, such as mystery or fantasy. A scavenger hunt
introduced upper elementary students to the fiction section that is newly reorganized
by genre. Making it easier to find books they like seems to increase their interest in
reading.
• How to take organized notes. We used notetaking to preview the plots and analyze the
genres of this years’ Young Readers’ Choice Award books.
• How to find and analyze information. We began the study of this year’s adopted species,
the bat, and students were asked to identify the facts they found most interesting.

Kindergarten – Third
Students will vote this week, each choosing his or her favorite of the five books nominated for
the Treasure State Award.

Everybody
• How to respectfully enjoy a cultural tradition such as the powwow.
• How to use Pax principles to become leaders.

Genius Club
Fourth and fifth graders explore STEM toys during lunch.
