I.

School Year 2013 – 2014 was the first time that Kilicao Elementary School has formally and
officially launched a reading program. And this school has dutifully implemented the
reading program taking into account the different stages and the appropriate reading
activities.

The Reading program dubbed “ IKAW, MAGALING NA BA MAGBASA has three main stages.

First is Learn to Read or the remedial reading stage.

Second is Read to Learn which is the Drop Everything And Read.

Third is Read to Create or the Read-A-Loud Activity

II. For the beginning phase of the implementation of the program, the pupils were required to
submit one notebook which served as their reader’s notebook.

The READER’S NOTEBOK is a place where pupils respond to the storybook they have read.
They write down their reflections or thoughts on the books read. They draw, imagine and
create using the reading passport. No need to correct or grade what the pupils have written
in their reading passport We allow them to express themselves without fear of judgment.
Reading should always be a fun experience, not a stressful one. The teachers always sign at
the bottom of the page to confirm that they’ve gone over that particular page.

THE TEACHERS were given a folder with handouts on the Reading Framework.

III. Everyday at 9:45 – 10:00 in the morning is Drop Everything And Read Activity. In line with
this, we implemented a Read-A-Thon wherein pupils take part in a fun and fast paced race
to read the most number of books during the period. To track the reading achievement of
the pupils during the Read-A-Thon, there is this Reading Progress Chart.

Before posting on the wall, teachers write down the names of the pupils on the chart. And
the story books are numbered. During the read-a-thon, the pupils themselves record their
progress by coloring the box that represents the book they’ve just read. The more colored
boxes, the more books read!

IV. At 12:30 – 1:00 in the afternoon is story time, circle time or read aloud time. Teachers read
aloud to pupils followed by supportive and engaging discussions about the story.

To make the Read-A-Loud activity more fun and exciting, there are mystery readers every
Friday. Mystery readers can be parents, teachers, High School students, Alumni, Police
Officers and Barangay Officials among others who come to our class to read a favorite or
well-liked story to the class. The children are surprised and love it.
V. Another is the STAR READERs. Star readers are SPG officers who read a story to the class.

VI. Another activity is Reading to the Principal. To recognize pupils’ achievement in reading, two
pupils per section are selected daily to go to the Principal’s office to read to the principal.
(Schedule: Monday: Grade 1&2, Tuesday Grade 3, Wednesday Grade 4, Thursday Grade 5
and Friday Grade 6) . Before the start of the program, a banner that says “I READ TO THE
PRINCIPAL” was prepared and hung at the principal’s office. After reading the story, the
pupil is given a button pin that says: I’m a reader. And she will tape her name on the banner.

The whole school got interested and excited for their turn to read to the principal.

ONE OF THE SECRETS OF SUCCESSFUL TEACHING IS EXCITE THE CLASSROOM AND

EXCITE THE CLASS.

The successful implementation of the reading program in our school is a collective efforts of individuals
whose main concern is the reading development of the pupils. Our school head, Mr. Miranda, the
teachers, parents and the community. But for this reading program to be successfully implemented,
we’re giving all the credits to INTERVIDA Philippines Foundation. Thank u for always making us feel
excited and hopeful.
