StoryWeaver Reading Program

Joyful Reading for everyone

Children should be introduced to books and encouraged to read from an early age.
Reading should not be limited to textbooks, but should include a range of books -
picture books, comics etc that children read for ‘fun’ and ‘joy’ (and not necessarily to
learn something). It should be reading for pleasure, reading to lose oneself in the world
of the characters and the places in it.

You may ask: why do students need joyful reading? Simply because reading opens
many doors of imagination and creativity. Stories make children curious, keen to ask
questions, eager to discover more - making them better learners for life.

Books in the reading program are focused on one thing alone- that the children enjoy
reading them without the burden of ‘needing to learn’. We have also added a lot of
easy, fun activities that will help your students connect with the books they read. The
activities cover everything from art and craft, to acting, to finding a solution to a
problem, to actually creating something with their hands.

What is the StoryWeaver Reading Program?

The Reading Program is a ready framework that the teacher can use to create a
‘Reading culture’ in their classrooms.

The StoryWeaver Reading Program offers the following:

• A structured week by week time table for 6 months of a school cycle
• Session plan for about 30-40 minutes per session
• Four different modules upto Grades 8
• Different themes for each month which draw inspiration from the pedagogical
framework as per Grades/Age Groups
• Provides a plus-plus to book reading through activities and hooks.
• Books specifically marked as ‘Read Alouds’ or ‘Read on Your Own’ to indicate
how to use them in classrooms.
• The Reading Program is available in 2 languages- English & Hindi
The Reading Program helps the teacher with a theme for each month and a book with
activity for each week. All they have to do is project the book on to a screen, read it
with their students and end it by doing a fun activity with them. And does the teacher
have to do a session every day? NO, just once a week is enough to get the students
excited about books.

Introduction, Summary, and Activity

Books in the structure come with a summary, an introduction, and an

activity.
● The summary is for the teacher, to get a quick idea of what each book is all
about.
● The introduction is a sentence or question the teacher should ask the class, to
introduce the book, to catch their attention, or to just create excitement around the
book or the concept in the book.
● The activity usually takes place at the end of the reading. Most activities are
classroom based for the children and the teacher can do it in the class to take the
concept of the book ahead and have fun with it! Some activities can be project
based so, do be done at home.

How should the books be read?

 nd Read on your
The books have been categorised into- Read Aloud a
own

The books to be Read Aloud h ave been marked separately. The idea behind these
books is for children to be able to listen and comprehend, and also learn how to read
with voice modulation.

The books marked Read on your own c an be read by the children individually, in pairs,
in groups (depending on the number of copies available) or as a class (if the book can
be projected).
Digital/E-Books /PDF versions

All the digital books that are included in the Reading Program are included in a folder
and shared with you. There are various ways through which children can read these
Digital/E Books:

● If there is a TV or a projector, the book can be displayed, so all children can read
the book along with the teacher.
● If there are computers or tablets in the school/centre, the books can be put on
them.
● In a class with few students, the teacher can read the story through their mobile
phone too
● The teacher can also print a few copies and give it to the children

Hearing from you!

Once the program is implemented in the schools you work with, we would expect you
to share your learnings from the ground with us after 2 months of completion of the
program and again after 6 months of completion. This is to help us understand the on-
ground usage of the program and learn from the experience of the organisation,
teachers and the children!
