At 12 years old, Matthew Henson leaves home and travels to Baltimore Maryland. He
enlists as a Cabin Boy on the Katie Hines

1887
While working in a shop, Matthew Henson is recruited on a survey in Nicaragua by
Commander Robert E. Peary, an explorer

1890-1891
Henson spends months with Peary in Greenland exploring unmapped regions

1906
Peary and Henson set the record for the furthest northern point while trying to
reach the pole, but are forced back by weather

April 6, 1909
Henson and Peary become the first people to reach the North Pole

1937-1938
Henson is elected to be a member of the Explorers Club while having a glacier named
after him.

May 9th, 1865


The Union Wins the civil war, outlawing African American slavery
