GENRES OF DANCE
BALLET
An artistic dance form performed to music using precise and highly formalized set steps
and gestures. Classical ballet, which originated in Renaissance Italy and established its present
form during the 19th century, is characterized by light, graceful, fluid movements and the use
of pointe shoes.
BALLROOM
Ballroom dance is a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed both socially and
competitively around the world, mostly because of its performance and entertainment aspects.
Ballroom dancing is also widely enjoyed on stage, film, and television.

CONTEMPORARY DANCE
Contemporary dance is a genre of dance performance that developed during the mid-
twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally
trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and
Europe. Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several
dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to
connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements”
HIP HOP
Hip hop dance is a range of street dance styles primarily performed to hip hop music or
that have evolved as part of hip hop culture. It is influenced by a wide range of styles that were
created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States.

JAZZ
Jazz dance is a performance dance and style that arose in the United States in the mid
20th century. Jazz dance may allude to vernacular jazz about to Broadway or dramatic jazz. The
two types expand on African American vernacular styles of dance that arose with jazz music.
Jazz dance, any dance to jazz accompaniments, composed of a profusion of forms. Jazz
dance paralleled the birth and spread of jazz itself from roots in Black American society and was
popularized in ballrooms by the big bands of the swing era (1930s and '40s).
TAP DANCE
Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the
floor as a form of percussion. Two major variations on tap dance exist: rhythm tap and
Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses on dance; it is widely performed in musical theater.

FOLK DANCE
A folk dance is a dance that reflects the life of the people of a certain country or region.
Not all ethnic dances are folk dances. For example, ritual dances or dances of ritual origin are
not considered to be folk dances. Ritual dances are usually called "Religious dances" because of
their purpose.

IRISH DANCE
Irish dance refers to a group of traditional dance forms originating from Ireland,
encompassing dancing both solo and in groups, and dancing for social, competitive, and
performance purposes.

MODERN DANCE
Modern dance is a broad genre of western concert or theatrical dance which included
dance styles such as ballet, folk, ethnic, religious, and social dancing; and primarily arose out of
Europe and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
SWING DANCE
Swing dance is a group of social dances that developed with the swing style of jazz music
in the 1920s–1940s, with the origins of each dance predating the popular "swing era".
