MODERN DANCE

Modern dance is a genre of western concert or theatrical dance that

started to develop in the United States and Europe in the late 19th
century. It was a protest against both the balletic and the interpretive
dance traditions of the time. The style includes dance forms such as
ballet, folk, ethnic, religious, and social dancing. Modern dance may
have started as a rejection of classical ballet techniques, but it is now a
recognizable art form that stands on its own. It employs a special
technique for developing the use of the entire body in movements
expressive of abstract ideas.

While modern dance and contemporary dance share some similarities,

they are distinct art forms with their own techniques and aesthetics.
Modern dance refers to the dance form that emerged in the early 20th
century, while contemporary dance is a more recent genre that
incorporates elements of modern, ballet, jazz, and other styles.

HERE ARE THE TYPES OF MODERN DANCE

1. LYRICAL DANCE: This style is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance that
often uses music with lyrics to inspire the movements of the dance. It's
characterized by fluidity and grace, with the dancer flowing seamlessly
from one move to another.
2. CONTEMPORARY DANCE: A genre of dance performance that
developed during the mid-twentieth century, it incorporates elements
from many styles of dance. It doesn't restrict itself to a specific dance
technique, but it's rather an assembly of various techniques.
3. HIP HOP DANCE: Born from the hip-hop culture, this dance style
includes a variety of street dance styles. It's often freestyle in nature and
hip-hop dancers often engage in battles—formal or informal freestyle
dance competitions.
4. FUSION DANCE: This is a type of modern dance that involves
combining several dance styles to create a new, unique dance form. This
can include any combination of dance genres, from ballet to
breakdancing.
5. BALLET: Although it's a classical dance form, modern ballet exists
where traditional ballet technique is used but with modern dance styles
incorporated.
