Question 1. (1.5 points) (L.O.1.4): To encode a message, we convert the text message into a stream of numerals
by associating each letter with its position in the alphabet: A is 1, B is 2, . . . , Z is 26, and assigning the number 27 to a
space between two words. After that, we break the enumerated message above into a sequence of 3 × 1 column vectors
and place them into a matrix A. Multiplying this matrix A by the Encoder K (the key), we obtain the encrypted

message B = KA. Decode the message, where K =  0 2 3 , B =  93

Question 2. (1.5 points) (L.O.1.3):

The resistances and voltages in the figure take the values:

R1 = 2, R2 = 3, R3 = 1, R4 = 5, R5 = 2, V1 = 11, V2 =
8, V3 = 15. Determine all three currents.

Question 3. (2.5 points) (L.O.1.2): Let F = span{(1, 1, 1), (2, −1, 0), (4, 1, 2)} be a subspace of R3 with the inner
product (x, y) = 2x1 y1 + 2x2 y1 + 2x1 y2 + 3x2 y2 + 4x3 y3 .

a. (1 point) Find the dimension and one basis for the orthogonal complement F ⊥ of F .

b. (1 point) Find the orthogonal projection of u = (4, 1, −3) onto F .

c. (0.5 point) Find m, n such that u = (3, n, m) ∈ F ⊥ .

Question 4. (2 points) (L.O.1.3): Let
f : R2 → R2 be the projection transformation onto the line d : x − 3y = 0,
g : R2 → R2 be the rotation transformation about the origin by 60o counterclockwise.
Let ABC be a triangle with 3 vertices: A(1, 1), B(1, 2), C(3, 1). Applying g on ABC, we obtain A1 B1 C1 : g(ABC) =
A1 B1 C1 and applying f on A1 B1 C1 , we obtain A2 B2 C2 : f (A1 B1 C1 ) = A2 B2 C2 .

a. (1 point) Find f ◦ g(x).

b. (0.5 point) Find the coordinates of A2 , B2 , C2 .

c. (0.5 point) Find the dimension and one basis for Ker(f ◦ g).

Question 5. (1.5 points) (L.O.1.4): A certain species with two age classes of 1 year’s duration has a survival
probability of 25% from class 1 to class 2. During the first year, all females produce no offspring. Empirical evidence
shows that, on average, each female gives birth to 4 females during the second year. The population now consists of
34 and 90 females in the first and second age classes respectively.

a. (0.5 point) How many females will there be in each age class after 2 year?

b. (1 points) Using the method of diagonalizing the transition matrix to find the number of females in each age class
after 100 years. Round each answer to the nearest integer.

Question 6. (1 point) (L.O.1.4): Let A be a 3 × 3 matrix. e1 = (−3, 1, 1)T , e2 = (−1, 2, 0)T and e3 = (1, 1, −1)T
are 3 eigenvectors of A associated with λ1 = 2, λ2 = −1, λ3 = 1, respectively.

a. (0.5 point) Find A × (3e1 + 2e2 − e3 ).

b. (0.5 point) Find A.
