Question 1. (1.5 points) (L.O.1.4): To encode a message, we convert the text message into a stream of numerals
by associating each letter with its position in the alphabet: A is 1, B is 2, . . . , Z is 26, and assigning the number 27 to a
space between two words. After that, we break the enumerated message above into a sequence of 3 × 1 column vectors
and place them into a matrix A. Multiplying this matrix A by the Encoder K (the key), we obtain the encrypted

Question 2. (1.5 points) (L.O.1.3): The figure shows the flow of traffic of a network. The diagram indicates the
average number of vehicles per hour entering and leaving the intersections and the arrows indicate the direction of
traffic flows. All streets are one-way. Setup and solve a system of linear equations to find the possible flows x1 , x2 , x3 ,
x4 , and x5 .

 x1 + 3x2 − x3 = 0;

Question 3. (2.5 points) (L.O.1.2): Let F = {x ∈ R3 | 2x1 − x2 + x3 = 0; } be a subspace of R3 with the

4x1 + 5x2 − x3 = 0

inner product (x, y) = 2x1 y1 + 2x2 y1 + 2x1 y2 + 3x2 y2 + 4x3 y3 .

a. (1 point) Find the dimension and one basis for the orthogonal complement F ⊥ of F .

b. (1 point) Find the orthogonal projection of u = (4, 1, −3) onto F ⊥ .

c. (0.5 point) Find m, n such that u = (3, n, m) ∈ F .

Question 4. (2.5 points) (L.O.1.3): Let
f : R2 → R2 be the projection transformation onto the line d : 3x − 4y = 0,
g : R2 → R2 be the rotation transformation about the origin by 45o clockwise.
Let ABC be a triangle with 3 vertices: A(1, 1), B(1, 2), C(3, 1). Applying g on ABC, we obtain A1 B1 C1 : g(ABC) =
A1 B1 C1 and applying f on A1 B1 C1 , we obtain A2 B2 C2 : f (A1 B1 C1 ) = A2 B2 C2 .

a. (1 point) Find f ◦ g(x).

b. (0.5 point) Find the coordinates of A2 , B2 , C2 .

c. (1 point) Find the dimensions and bases for Ker(f ◦ g) and Im(f ◦ g).

Question 5. (2 points) (L.O.1.4): In a city with 100, 000 citizens, there are 30, 000 citizen support the party A
(group A), 40, 000 citizen support the party B (group B), and 30, 000 citizens support neither A nor B (group C).
After 1 month, in group A, there are 10% that change to B, 5% that change to C, in group B there are 8% that change
to A, 7% that change to C; in group C there are 7% that change to A, 8% that change to B.

a. (0.5 point) How many citizens that support A, B and C in the previous month?

b. (1.5 points) Using the method of diagonalizing the transition matrix to find the numbers of citizens that support
the parties A and B after 3 years. Round each answer to the nearest integer.
