English Checklist
Your essay has to consist of 3 parts – introduction, analysis, conclusion
Introduction:
Remember A.F.P – state the audience, form and purpose of the text.
You may also write about the overall tone here as well.
Analysis: (what to look out for)
Structure – paragraph length; headings/subheadings; sections; any charts/graphs; idea
development throughout the text; how the text starts off
(questions/exclamations/assertions/opinions); contrast within the text; intentional
punctuation

Form – conventions of the text type (what’s typical for the form of the text); how does
author appeal to audience through text (i.e. if review – does he first give factual info then
opinion; if personal narrative – does he use first-person viewpoint; etc.)

Language – factual information (statistic/numerical info/dates and references to


dictionaries/encyclopaedias; quotations from reliable sources; viewpoint (1st; 2nd; 3rd); noun
phrases; words with certain connotations; lexical fields; direct appeal to the audience
(‘would YOU let...’ etc); repetition; parallel phrases; figurative language (similes,
metaphors, idioms, personification, etc); superlative forms of adjectives (best; fastest; most
difficult; etc).

Conclusion:

Restate the introduction with a few main points from the body – you can use the following
starters:

All in all, the author achieves their goals of ... by using ...

To sum up, by including devices like ..., the writer helps convey ... and ... the audience
