Format: All papers are to be written in Times New Roman with size 12

font, normal
margins (the default setting on most programs), and are to be double
spaced. Do not use
extra spaces between paragraphs. They must also have an appropriate
title (i.e., one that
specifically indicates the paper’s topic) and numbered pages;
additionally your name, the
instructor’s name, the date, and the course title, should appear in the
upper left corner of
the first page--please consult an MLA style guide if you are unsure. All
citations and
references are to be made in MLA style.
Organization: Make sure that your thesis is clearly and precisely
stated—it’s generally a
good idea to put it in the introductory paragraph. Paragraphs should have
a topic sentence
that describes what will be addressed in that paragraph, and all
paragraphs should directly
relate to the thesis. Both paragraphs and sentences should flow smoothly
and logically
from one to the next. Your conclusion should reiterate your argument,
making it clear
what you have argued. Quotations should be cited in accordance with
MLA style
guidelines.
Style: Be sure to maintain an impersonal, academic tone throughout.
Avoid 1st person
(and 2nd person)—keep your essay in the 3rd person throughout.
Choose your words
carefully and use vocabulary appropriate for academic writing. Also be
sure to proofread
your paper and correct all spelling and grammatical mistakes.
Topics:
1. Analyze either story by Borges we have read in light of Foucault’s
notion of
the “author function.” What does Foucault mean by that term? And
how
does Borges’s story present a variation of that idea?
