LEGAL SERVICES DAY

National Legal Services Day is observed annually on November 9 to commemorate the start of
the Legal Services Authorities Act 1987, which entered into force in 1995. On National Legal
Services Day, state legal services offices across the country host legal education activities to let
people know that they can get free legal assistance. Additionally, every year advertisements are
run nationwide to let the public know about the different services that Legal Services Authorities
offer.

The aim of the Day is to increase public understanding of the rights of litigants as well as the
various parts of the Legal Services Authorities Act. NALSA was founded in compliance with the
Legal Services Authorities Act of 1987 to organise Lok Adalats for the amicable settlement of
disputes and to provide free legal services to the less fortunate members of society.

The Indian Constitution's Article 39A mandates that the State make sure the legal system
functions in a way that advances justice based on equal opportunity. In order to guarantee that no
citizen is denied the opportunity to access justice owing to a financial or other limitation, it must,
in particular, provide free legal assistance through proper legislation, programmes, or other ways.
Additionally, the State must ensure equality before the law and a judicial system that advances
justice based on equal opportunity for all people under Articles 14 and 22(1).

Theme for National Legal Services Day in 2022

The government has been promoting the legal idea that everyone who qualifies as a poor citizen
(who is unable to pay for legal services) is legally entitled to get free legal representation.
