Method Statement
Method statement constructive solutions
Nitocote ET402
It is suggested that, for temperatures above 35°C, the following guidelines are adopted as good
working practice:
(i) Store unmixed materials in a cool (preferably temperature controlled) environment, avoiding
exposure to direct sunlight.
(ii) Keep equipment cool, arranging shade protection if necessary. It is especially important to keep
cool those surfaces of the equipment which will come into direct contact with the material itself.
(iii) Try to avoid application during the hottest times of the day, arrange temporary shading as
necessary.
(iv) Make sufficient material, plant and labour available to ensure that application is a continuous
process.
Equipment
It is suggested that the following list of equipment is adopted as a minimum requirement
Mixing equipment : 1 KW slow speed drill, 400 or 500 rpm, plus Jiffy mixing paddle
Registered Office: Industrial Area, Phase 4, Road No. 102, Street No. 82
Method statement constructive solutions
All surfaces must be clean and free from debris, loose or flaking material and contamination such as
mortar and paint splashes, oil and grease. Excess laitance deposits are best removed by light
mechanical grinding or grit blasting followed by vacuum cleaning or air blowing to remove dust.
1.1.1 New concrete or cementitious substrates should be at least 28 days old and have
moisture content not exceeding 5%.
1.1.2 All surfaces should be clean, dry and free from dust, laitance, curing compounds and
standing water.
1.1.3 Following the surface preparations, care should be taken to ensure that any exposed blow
holes are filled with Nitomortar TC2000.
Note
It should be remembered that Nitocote ET402 coating is relatively thin, and even minor substrate
irregularities will be reflected on the finished floor/wall. Therefore, the substrate preparation
should be fine textured, unless otherwise indicated or instructed by the Engineer.
1.2.1 Any metal surfaces should be blasted to a bright finish, meeting the requirements of
Swedish Standard SA 2½ or equal.
1.2.2 The lining work should be programmed so that newly cleaned metal is coated as soon as
possible before the formation of rust or scale.
Note
Where these methods are considered impracticable, alternative methods may be considered but
a clean, sound and dry substrate must still result. In particular, it is essential that the substrate
does not suffer from conditions of rising damp. Fosroc must approve any alternative preparations
prior to commencement of work, as Fosroc will not accept responsibility under any other
condition.
Method statement constructive solutions
2.0 Priming
2.4 When primer is used, it should be applied in a thin, continuous film and should be touch dry but
allowed to cure for no more than 24 hours @ 25°C prior to application of Nitocote ET402.
3.0 Mixing
3.1 Nitocote ET402 coating is supplied in two pre-weighed packs (base and hardener packs), which
are ready for immediate on-site use. Part mixing of these components is NOT acceptable and will
affect both performance and appearance of the finished surface, and would furthermore
automatically invalidate Fosroc’s standard product guarantee.
3.3 The individual components should be thoroughly stirred to disperse any settlement, which may
have occurred during transit or storage. Then the two should be mixed together.
3.2 Mixing should be carried out using a heavy duty, slow-speed drill with proprietary mixing paddle
attachment. The entire contents of the hardener container should be added to the base container
and mixed together continuously for 3 to 5 minutes, until a uniform, homogeneous mix is
achieved.
4.0 Application
4.1 The applicator should ensure that there are sufficient supplies of plant, labor and materials to
make the mixing and subsequent application process a continuous one for any given,
independent floor area.
4.2 Once mixed, the material must be used within its specified pot life mentioned in the technical
datasheet.
4.3.1 Nitocote ET402 can be hand-applied using a brush or short haired lamb’s wool roller.
Method statement constructive solutions
4.3.2 The first coat should be firmly applied onto the prepared surface as soon as mixing is
complete, and scrubbed well into the surface to achieve uniform thickness of 200
microns.
4.3.3 The second coat should be applied within 8 to 48 hours at 25 oC of the application of the
first coat, ensuring having unbroken film thickness of 200 microns.
4.3.4 Under no circumstances should subsequent coats be applied before the minimum over
coating time.
4.3.5 If the maximum over coating time (24 hours) is exceeded, then the previous coat must be
lightly abraded to provide a mechanical ‘key’ for the next coat.
4.4.1 Faster rates of application are possible using airless spray machine. Consult the local
Fosroc office prior to application for technical advice.
4.4.2 In cool weather the following precautions should be adopted to ensure correct spray
techniques.
4.4.5 Solvent 102, up to 5%, can be added to the material to aid atomization and spray
techniques.
4.4.6 Tip sizes and spray pressures can be altered to obtain the correct spray pattern.
4.4.7 Trials are recommended for any spray application prior to mobilization on site.
5.0 Over-coating
5.1 Any application of Nitocote ET402 which have become damaged can be readily over-coated.
5.2 The existing surface should be well abraded, using a stiff wire brush, or similar, to ensure
that a good mechanical bond will be achieved between the two layers.
6.1 To increase thickness or bridge fine cracks in the substrate, Nitocote ET402 may be used in
conjunction with glass fibre cloth.
6.2 The cloth should be laid directly on the first coat whilst the coating is still wet and should be
pressed in and smoothed out with a stiff nylon roller.
6.3 The second coat should be applied on the cloth, allowing no more than 48 hours at 25°C
between the two coats.
6.4 The second coat should also achieve a uniform coating not less than 200 microns.
7 Cleaning
8.1 Tools and equipment should be cleaned with Solvent 102 immediately after use.
This method statement is offered by Fosroc as a ‘standard proposal’ for the application of Nitocote
ET402. It remains the responsibility of the Engineer to determine the correct method for any given
application.
Where alternative methods are to be used, these must be submitted to Fosroc for approval, in writing,
prior to commencement of any work. Fosroc will not accept responsibility or liability for variations to the
above method statement under any other condition.

THE PROJECT
Saudi Elastomers Project is a world scale synthetic rubber Greenfield plant in Middle-East. The
project is a joint venture between Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) and affiliates of
ExxonMobil at a cost US $ 3.4 Billion. The facility will be integrated with the existing Al-Jubail
complex and completion is anticipated in 2015.
The project is located in Jubail city costal area, where the soil is aggressive with potential of
chemical attack.
Since the durability is required in such enviroment, adequate structural protection
mandatory.
THE BENEFITS
Fosroc’s environment friendly protective coating gave an excellent solution as protective
coating as well as impermeable waterproofing properties complied with the new SABIC
standard SES18, moreover due to its thick build thickness and solvent free components, it was
easier for contractors to achieve the required dry film thickness (DFT) with excellent bond
strength, concrete pinholes were easily treated with a skim coat of epoxy resin repair layers
that sealed all bug holes, cracks and pinholes, allowing for a seamless and continuous coat of
protective coating.
This system not only helped in quicker application time, but proved to save on primers’ costs Nitocote NT402 applied on GRP
besides the multi layers applications as required by other options. manhole

THE PROJECT
The Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu (RCJY) was established on 21 September
1975, as an autonomous organization of the Saudi Arabian Government. The
Commission is governed by a Board of Directors and its Chairman reports to the
Council of Ministers, one in Jubail and the other in Yanbu. The mission of the RCJY is
to: "Plan, promote, develop and manage Petrochemicals and Energy intensive
industrial cities through successful customer focus and partnerships with investors,
employees, communities and other stakeholders. This project will serve as
accommodation for Royal Commission service and maintenance contractor labor and Material Mixing
can accommodate 3,000 labors in this campus.
THE SOLUTION
The client RCJY, specification is after concrete surface repair, Amine cured epoxy
primer coat, intermediate & top coat solvent-free amine cured coal tar epoxy for the
below ground concrete structure.
FOSROC engaged with RCJY technical engineer to change the specification as primer
less protective coating system for sound, non-porous concrete by using Nitocote
ET402, Amine cured epoxy resin modified with coal tar pitch high build single coat Application of Nitocote ET402
application can achieve the required DFT in single coat application. Our system gave – over Nitomortar TC200
the benefit to the client on cost of primer, time of primer application and second coat
application of Nitocote ET402 and succeeds with good adhesion with concrete.
THE BENEFITS
Material fully complies as client required & proposed material given better satisfaction
to RCJY, since it gave better bonding with the concrete and full filled all requirements.
It made the consultant, RC project Management Team (PMT) happy since, the coating
job was easy and fast. It helped them to complete the work within the time limit.
Fosroc provide required technical training to the project team and time to time Before Backfilling Q.C. Inspection
supervision to complete the job in success way.

Project Task
Being Located in the massive industrial coastal city,
providing a proper protection for the underground
structural foundations is a must, especially when being
embedded in a saline ground conditions like those in
Jubail city.
Constructive Solutions
In order to meet with the structural needs and
requirements, Fosam proposed its comprehensive and
optimum solution which was to ensure excellent
waterproofing and protection for the underground
foundation. Nitocote ET402 was used to protect the
underground foundation, in collaboration with Nitomortar
TC2000 which was applied to maintain uniform surfaces
for the concrete substrate. Swellable and PVC
Waterstops were applied into the construction and
movement joints to ensure proper sealing against water
penetration.
Value to Client
The solution provided by Fosam was the appropriate
option for the client to meet the technical requirements.
Along with that, the continuous technical support and
supervision were of great value to guarantee proper
application process.
