Keep frequently used haul roads and other heavy traffic areas dry by elevating the surface to
facilitate runoff. Dryer road caused less wear and tear on tires and equipment and creates less
sediment-laden water that will require treatment.

Maintenance
(Such regular grading program that will minimize erosion, sediment build-up, noise and dust; to
ensure that potholes, washboarding are repaired immediately to minimize noise, dust and
equipment wear; spray water, calcium chloride or other approved dust suppressant on the road

Unsafe Equipment Practice (MSHA)

- Attempting to dump over the edge of the pile even tough there’s no berm, or the berm is
inadequate
- Attempting to dump over the edge even toght the area below the dump points has been
loaded-out and made steeper than material’s angle of repose
- Attempting to dump over the edge in an area where there are cracks
- Backing up at an angle to the edge
- Hitting into the berm when positioning to dump
- Running the rear tires up onto the berm so that material can be dumped over the berm.
- Jamming on the brakes while backing near the edge of a pile
- Raising the bed too high when the material sticks in the bed
- Operating equipment while not wearing the seat belt
