have alas sad news to impart, something I’ve had
to do a little too often recently. Word reached the
Nerve Centre on 7 November that artist Kevin
O’Neill had died after a long illness, aged sixty-
nine. Formerly an art editor here in the Nerve
Centre, instrumental in 2000 AD’s early spiky
design and the creation of the credit boxes, as
a freelance artist he co-created Nemesis the
Warlock with Pat Mills, and his unique imagination
and unmistakable style made him an instant
favourite with Squaxx and an enormous influence
on the next generation of creators. A talented
designer — Walter the Wobot, Hammerstein and
The near future. Mother Nature has turned against the people that live upon the
Earth’s surface. Now, the planet’s flora and fauna have mutated and are viciously

 OBITUARY KEVIN O’NEILL
A HYPER TALENT
KEVIN O’NEILL, WHO DIED THIS MONTH, WAS THE
ORIGINAL 2000 AD ART DROID. HE WAS WELL-
known by readers of the title as the co-creator of
the defining strips Ro-Busters, which evolved into
the ABC Warriors, and Nemesis the Warlock with
writer Pat Mills, as well as Marshal Law with Mills
for Epic Comics in America and the two-decade
masterpiece of steampunk futurism The League
of Extraordinary Gentlemen with Alan Moore.
He was also assistant art editor on 2000 AD
from its pre-launch period in 1976, as deputy to
his mentor and friend Jan Shepheard, with whom
he’d worked on titles like Buster and Monster Fun
since cold-calling IPC’s office at the age of sixteen
in 1969 and being offered a junior position.
When Shepheard left to become art editor on
Starlord a few months later (a job O’Neill turned
down because he enjoyed 2000 AD so much and
expected it to last the longest), he became art
editor himself, eventually leaving to go freelance
late in 1978.
During his time at 2000 AD, O’Neill drew the
first-ever image of Tharg the Mighty on the cover
of Prog 1, a small thumbnail headshot at the
centre of the swirl where the free Space Spinner
toy was mounted. His other major contribution
had an incalculable effect on the development of
British comics into a new era.
Having grown sick of ‘bodging’ out artists’
signatures on strips, and determined that they
be recognised by name for their talents rather
than kept anonymous as a form of institutional
protectionism to stop other publishers trying to
poach them away, he introduced the 2000 AD
‘Credit Card’ in Prog 36. It was the first time
British creators were recognised by name for their
work, and this allowed for the concept of the ‘fan
favourite’ artist in years to come, while American
editors now knew who to approach for work. What
was bad news for the management unleashed a
generation of creators.
Raised in south-east London and inspired by Tex
Avery cartoons, Mad magazine, his elder brother
John’s drawing and the work of Ken Reid, O’Neill
was an aficionado of film special effects. He
published a fanzine dedicated to the craft named
Just Imagine: The Journal of Film and Television
Special Effects in 1975, for which he secured a
Ray Harryhausen interview by calling the only
person with that name in the London phonebook.
A later design job for a proposed Gerry Anderson
project didn’t work out, but O’Neill’s enjoyment of
Thunderbirds and his robot-focused 1976 fanzine
Mek Memoirs with writer Chris Lowder fed into Ro-
Busters’ creation.
Through the 1980s, his work became synonymous
with his closest working partner and lifelong friend
Pat Mills, with the brilliantly garish, hyper-detailed
world of Nemesis the Warlock and his arch-enemy
Torquemada influenced by their shared upbringing
in religious schooling. In 1987 they created the
fabulously brutal superhero satire Marshal Law for
Marvel’s Epic Comics, later taking it to their own
self-started UK title Toxic! (alongside John Wagner,
Alan Grant and Mick McMahon).
O’Neill’s work on a 1986 Green Lantern strip
with Moore for DC was famously banned by the
censorious Comics Code Authority on the basis of
his general style, and he did relatively little work
in America in those days, aside from the 1986 DC
graphic novel Metalzoic with Mills (later reprinted
in 2000 AD) and the Batman spoof Bat-Mite with
Alan Grant. In 1999, however, Moore enlisted him
for his Victorian superhero fantasy The League
of Extraordinary Gentlemen with America’s
Best Comics, later adapted into a Sean Connery-
starring film.
‘He is one of the finest and most distinctive
comic-book artists this country has ever turned
out,’ Moore said of O’Neill in the Guardian in
2011. ‘Also, he is the only one of my mainstream
collaborators who is from a similar background to
myself and who has ever taken my side in any of
my bust-ups with the comic companies.’ 
He was quietly spoken and not often
interviewed, a calm and mellow flipside to the
very visible generation of rock-star comic creators
who emerged alongside him and in the years after.
Attempting to secure an interview for the Judge
Dredd Megazine a few years back, he told me
‘I don’t really like doing that sort of thing’, and
asking again earlier this year, he sadly had to
decline for the time being due to his health, with
the hopeful caveat we might pick things up later.

Kudos, then, to 2000 AD’s PR droid and Thrillcast
host Michael Molcher, who in 2021 persuaded
him to sit for a near five-hour chat which can
currently be heard on 2000 AD’s podcast channels.
Thoroughly essential listening for anyone intrigued
by the career of this most unique of artists, O’Neill
is open, warm and very funny throughout, revealing
that he considered 2019’s The Tempest, the fourth
and final volume of The League of Extraordinary
Gentlemen, to be his final major work in comics,
and that he was content to leave it there.
‘I really want to finish with long-form comics
on a happy note,’ he said. ‘I don’t want to be all
miserable and bitter and twisted because that can
so easily happen. No, I think of all the happy times
and I can laugh at the times that weren’t happy
now, because they’re in the past. I’ve found things
are either good exciting, or they’re terrible but
funny. You’ve got to see the funny side, you know?’
Kevin O’Neill’s final work for 2000 AD, a return
to his first strip for the title Bonjo From Beyond
the Stars alongside writer Garth Ennis, will
appear in 2022’s final prog of the year. The long-
delayed Moon and Serpent Bumper Book of Magic
by Alan Moore and the late Steve Moore, scheduled
for publication by Top Shelf/Knockabout next year,
will also feature a strip illustrated by him.
The comics industry has lost one of its greatest,
most visually explosive imaginations ever. ‘It’s been
a good roll,’ Kevin told the Thrillcast. ‘I’ve done
more than I expected back when I walked into the
Fleetway building. It’s been quite an experience.’
