Recording Rotating Weight and Off-Bottom Torque
Rotating Weight - The Weight Indicator reading which includes the weight of the traveling
equipment and the drag-free buoyed weight of the drillstring suspended by the blocks.
.
Off-Bottom Torque - The torque required to rotate the drillstring at a standard RPM without
drilling torque.

String Tension Limit - The maximum safe Weight Indicator load with no torque to avoid plastic
yield (stretch damage) of the drillstring.
Overpull - The excess Up Drag required to hoist the drillstring at a standard speed without rotation or
circulation. (Observed Weight Indicator Load - Up Weight = Overpull).
Up Drag - The frictional resistance (drag) to upward movement of the drillstring.
(Up Weight - Rotating Weight = Up Drag).
Up Weight - The Weight Indicator load required to raise the drillstring out of the hole. Recorded on a per-
stand-drilled interval at a standard speed with no rotation or circulation.
Rotating Weight - The Weight Indicator load of the suspended drillstring while rotating and without
circulation.
Down Weight - The Weight Indicator load required to lower the drillstring into the hole. Rrecorded on
a per-stand-drilled interval at a standard speed with no rotation or circulation.
Down Drag - The frictional resistance (drag) to downward movement of the drillstring.
(Rotating Weight - Down Weight = Down Drag).
Set-Down Weight - The excess Down Drag required to lower the drillstring at a standard speed with
no rotation or circulation. (Down Weight - Observed Weight Indicator Load = Set-Down Weight).
String Set-Down Limit - The minimum safe Weight Indicator load (with no torque) to avoid
compression damage of the drillstring.

Kelly Drive Connection Practices
Note: Record drilling parameters on every third connection (1 stand).
Stop the rotary, maintain pump rate and Slowly raise the drillstring to
the last connection depth.
Slowly lower the string and ream down to +/-20 feet from bottom.
Stop rotating.
Set the slips while lowering the drillstring and make the connection.
After the Connection, slowly lower the kelly into the rotary, slowly
increase rotation and pump speed to drilling rate.
