Tissues
Tissue is a group of cells that are similar in structure and/or
work together to achieve a particular function.

OR

A group of similar cells performing speci c function is called

tissue. Cells specialising in one function are often grouped
together in the body.

Differences in Plant and Animal Tissue

1. Plants are stationary 1. Animals can move and

so most of their tissues they consume more
are dead and only energy so most of their
supportive, which tissues are living.
provide them with
structural strength.

2. The growth in plants is 2. In animals growth is

limited to certain not limited to speci c
regions. regions.

Differences in Plant and Animal Tissue (contd…)

3. There are some tissues in 3. Cell growth in animals is

plants that divide more uniform. So there is no
throughout their life and such demarcation of dividing
these are localised to in and non-dividing regions in
certain regions. animals.

4. The structural 4. The structural

organisation is less organisation of organ and
specialised and complex. organ system is far more
specialised and complex than
plants.

Plant Tissues
Types of plant tissues:
1. Meristematic Tissue
• Apical Meristem
• Intercalary Meristem
• Lateral Meristem

1. Permanent Tissue
• Simple Permanent tissue
i. Parenchyma
ii. Collenchyma
iii. Sclerenchyma
• Complex Permanent tissue
i. Xylem or wood
ii. Phloem or bast

Meristematic Tissue
Meristematic tissue is a group of cells
that are in continuous state of division or
have the capacity to divide. (Dividing
tissue)

These tissue are found in growing regions

of plants and plant grow by these tissues.

Characteristic features
The characteristics of these tissue are:

•Cells may be round, oval , polygonal or

rectangular.
•They have thin cellulose walls.
•They do not have intercellular spaces.
•Dense cytoplasm with prominent nuclei.
•The cells lack vacuoles.

Types of meristematic tissue

It can be classi ed on the
basis of their position as:

a. Apical Meristem:
It occurs at the growing
tips of stem and roots
and increases the length
of the stem and the roots.

b. Lateral Meristem:
• This meristem is present along the lateral sides of stem and
roots.
• It is exclusively present in dicot plants where it increases the
girth of stem and root.

c. Intercalary Meristem:
• It is present at the base of leaves and internodes. It increases
the length bet ween t wo nodes.
• It is usually found in monocots.
• The activity of this meristem also add to the length of the plant
or its organs.

Questions to do..

What is the utility of tissues in multi-

cellular organisms?

Why do the cells of meristematic tissue

lack vacuoles?
