Unit 9: Saving
Traditional Practices Which affect our Saving
Saving - using money and other resources wisely.
- Keeping something for future consumption.
The purposes of saving are:
Ø To buy big things
Ø For emergency
Ø During retirement
Ø To achieve our goal
Ø For future consumption
Ø To fulfill Social obligation
Ø To improve life
The traditional practices that affect saving habits are:
1. Extravagant practices-is the habit of spending or using resources in un controlled way, like,
• excess wedding
• funeral ceremonies
• memorial feasts
• Religious celebrations etc…
2. Absence of family planning
Family planning-is limiting the number of children so that it is easier to take good care of
them.
Absence of family planning results
§ There will be a lot of children and it becomes difficult to fulfill their basic needs.
§ More money spent on children rather than saving.
3. Harmful traditional practices.
Some of the harmful traditional practices are
v People refrain to work during religious days
v Excessive generosity
v Lack of good work habits.

Unit 10: Active Community participation
Levels of community Participation
Active community participation- the involvement of citizens in socio-economic and political spheres.
Essences of community participation are:
ü Solve social problems
ü Create new things
ü Promote common goods
ü For the well-being of social, economic and political.
The roles of civic societies depend on their needs and aims. Here are some of the common activities.
§ Coordinating and employing the concerted effort of people to create a peaceful and pleasant living
environment in the community.
§ Educating the community and access to information
§ Lobbying to influence legislation.
§ Conducting research and creating the opportunity for public discussion to develop policies and
programs.
§ Raising funds to implement activities and or development projects.
§ Peace building, democracy and good governance.
Civic societies in Undemocratic governments
o They serve the government not the people
o Established and controlled by the government
o They were not to lobby to the government and keep it accountable
Civic societies in a democratic government are;
• Vital to the political independence of society
• Promoting their member interests and holding a government accountable to the government.
