ASSESSMENT OF FACTORS HINDER NON ADHERENCE TO THE

TREATMENT REGIMEN AMONG CLIENTS WITH CHRONIC

DISEASES

INTRODUCTION

Non adherence to treatment regimen is a major problem in the healthcare industry. According to
the World Health Organization, non-adherence to treatment among chronic disease patients is
estimated at 50%. Furthermore, chronic diseases are now recognized as the leading cause of
mortality and disability worldwide, and they are spreading across every socioeconomic class and
region.it is also have found that, noncompliance with medication is very common among chronic
disease patients such as those with hypertension, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and psychiatric illnesses.
Also, according to the WHO, Two-thirds of hypertensive patients have poor blood pressure
control because of poor adherence to therapy. The reasons for this are many, but they can be
broadly classified into four categories such as lack of knowledge, coercion and external pressure,
lack of motivation and side effects.

Vrijens B, De Geest S, Hughes DA (2012), they defined Adherence as to a patient's ability to

follow the recommended treatment regimen. But Some patients may not adhere to their
treatments at different stages. They may refuse to fill their prescriptions at the pharmacy or not
begin their treatment at all. In addition, according to (Osterberg and Blaschke, 2005; Sokol et al.,
2005; Brown and Bussell, 2011; Raebel et al., 2012; Kardas, 2013) In addition to increasing
healthcare costs and hospitalizations, nonadherence leads to lower quality of life. Finally,
according to (Cramer, 2004; Stankuniene et al., 2012; Kleinsinger, 2018) Non adherence is a
worldwide issue.

But Also Chronic disease is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as is generally
slow in progression, long-lasting, and not passed from person to person.

There are also some factors that may contribute to non adherence. These include: the patient's
perception of the severity of their illness, their beliefs about treatment or the disease, their social
support network and finally their personality type.
This has led to a number of consequences such as the effects of non-adherence are not only
limited to the health and well-being of the individual but also affect their family members and
society at large which leads to poorer health outcomes, more frequent hospitalization and higher
costs

In this article, we will present some factors that can be assessed for their influence on
nonadherence to treatment regimen among clients with chronic diseases.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The study found that patients with chronic diseases are more likely to stop their treatment
regimen because of the side effects. Patients with chronic diseases who experience adverse
events are at a greater risk for non-adherence than those without adverse events.

The main factors that hinder non adherence to the treatment regimen among clients with chronic
diseases are:

- Lack of knowledge about their condition

- Personal beliefs and values

- Lack of social support

- Poor access to health care services

Also, there are other factors that may hinder the non adherence to treatment regimen. The most
common one is the lack of financial resources and a lack of social support.

In order to improve the adherence, it is important to identify the factors that are hindering it and
then find ways to solve them.
OBJECTIVES

The objectives classifies into two parts which are the main objective and the specific objectives

MAIN OBJECTIVE

The main objective of this study is to assess the factors hinder non adherence to the treatment
regimen among clients with chronic diseases.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE

The Specific Objectives are shown as follows;

1. To establish factors associated with non-adherence to recommended medication among

patients attending the clinic.
2. To determine the prevalence of non-adherence to recommended medication to the
patients.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUSCOPE OF THE STUDY

The following are significance of the study;

i. The study will demonstrate that there is a link between the non adherence to the treatment
regimen among clients with chronic diseases.
ii. The study will also help in obtaining a clear image of the major impacts that hinder non
adherence among clients with chronic diseases.
