When placed side by side, these two

excellent examples by Hibbard chroni-
cle the development of his artistic style.
Vose Galleries first handled Winter in the
Hills in 1925, and we are thrilled that the
work has returned to us a century later,
still in its original frame. The painting
exhibits the delicate coloring and dap-
pled brushwork that define his earliest
landscapes, which remain sought-after
by collectors today. Edge of Town, Jeffer-
sonville, Vermont was likely created only
a few years later, yet is rendered with
the fluid strokes and saturated palette
Hibbard gradually adopted as his career
progressed. It is a particularly charming
composition demonstrating the art-
ist’s respect for Vermonters’ way of life,
here in the form of a resolute logger and
his trusty oxen braving the deep snow.
