Anna's interest in business started when she was a fourth-grade
pupil. She helped hermotherin preparing their cookie products andselling
them to their stall in the supermarket every day. When she graduated
from senior high school, she learned to devise her own strategies in selling
and to improve the ingredients of the cookies her mother taught her.
In college, she managed to have her own coffee shop, which offers
several kinds of desserts. Can we consider Anna as an entrepreneur? Is
selling cookies and other desserts can be called entrepreneurship?
Unit 1: ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND ICT{
Entrepreneurship is a way of exchanging products or services. It
can also be described as the task of managing a business to improve the
life of an individual. This word coincides with different business activities,
which can be in the form of producing or serving tangible or intangible
products.
An entrepreneur is a person who.
plans, organizes, manages, supervises,
and performs the functions of an
owner who is directly related to the
risks and uncertainties of a business or
an enterprise for the purpose of having
an income or profit. He or she acts as a
visionary, an innovator, and a change
agent. You can simply say that an
entrepreneur plays the role of an actor
while entrepreneurship is the act.
The concept of entrepreneur is somewhat related to the concept of
manager. However, it can differ in many areas. For instance, the income
of an entrepreneur depends on the earning or progress of the company
while a manager’s salary is fixed.
To better distinguish the difference between an entrepreneur and
a manager, look at the table below.

Render a serviceAnyone can sell products anytime, provided that he or she has all
the necessary resources in order to achieve his or her immediate goal/s.
However, not everyone can succeed in this field without having the basic
knowledge on how to handle a business. Becoming an entrepreneur
means overseeing the possible problems that may arise in the business.
The concept of entrepreneurship started to develop before the
colonization era begins. The people in a community were gathered ina
certain place to trade goods. They trade products such as food, metals,
fabrics, and animals.
In the modern-day world, technology plays a big part in people's
lives. The procedures or methods of traditional trading have changed
and have become modernized over time. People no longer need to
consume most of their time, effort, and resources in preparing, advertising,
and selling their products or services. They can use modern-day resources
to operate and produce products and services effortlessly. Due to
these changes, the competitions among entrepreneurs became more
challenging.
Principles of Entrepreneurship
The following are the principles that you need to consider before
entering the world of entrepreneurs.
1. If there’s a will, there’s a way. Anything is possible to a person
who has the will and determination to reach his or her goals.
Your passion to start a business is one of the essential factors to
stay in the business.
Init 1: ENTREPREN|
|EURSHIP AND ICTRea, Par sean
2. Youneed to consider the place orlocation where you want your
business to be established. Choose a location that is convenient
for customers to go to. It must be strategically planned.
3. Interest or passion in the business is not enough to keep the
business going. You still need to have the knowledge and skills
in running the business.
4, Your financial status must be stable enough to grow and sustain
your business.
5. The backbone of a business depends on its people and its
workforce. Having the right people for the position makes the
business more productive and competitive.
6. “High risk, high return policy” is a policy that means the higher
the tisk, the higher the chances of benefits you may get. If you
will settle for anything less, expect the same level of investment
returns.
Entrepreneurship brings many benefits to one’s country. It makes
the economy grow progressively, since it provides employment for the
people. It also increases the supply of the products or services, which
helps sustain the demands of the consumers.
The Roles of an Entrepreneur in ICT
The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays a big
role in the business industry because of its features, which can make the
process of production and dissemination of information fast, reliable,
efficient, and updated. ICT revolves in the 4
study of computers, telecommunications,
Internet, media, and productivity tools or
different software that can aid the users
to perform specific tasks. Some of the
tasks include typing of letters and memos
using Microsoft. Word; and .computing,
organizing, analyzing, and validating data
using Microsoft Excel.
agg
Se
HELE: Foundation of Life Skills 4—onre
Entrepreneurs also contribute to the development and
improvement of the world of ICT, since its main objective is to publish and
disseminate information to the public. ICT also plays an essential part
in the business industry. Deepening their knowledge in ICT has become
‘one of the main goals of most people engaged in ICT, which leads them
to the study of other fields, such as Science and Technology and Arts
and Music.

44 ) HELE: Foundation of Life Skill 4Different Kinds of Business
A business can range from small to large enterprise. The most
common types of businesses in the Philippines that entrepreneurs can
choose from are the following:
lis
Sole proprietorship is the simplest among all other types of
business. The business is owned and managed by a single
person only. Proprietor is the term used referring to the owner
of this type of business. He or she is fully accountable on the
profits, liabilities, and legal issues of his or her business.
Partnership consists of two or more persons. Each person
contributes monetarily to the business fund. The profits earned
will be divided among themselves depending on the terms
they have agreed upon. When a member of the partnership
suddenly leaves the business, the business may be dissolved.
There are two kinds of partnership—general and limited.
a. General partnership means that each member has an
equal authority to manage and control the business and
to make decisions regarding the business as well. The
disadvantage of this partnership is that when a member
in the partnership obtains debts which he or she could not
pay, all the other members will also be liable.
b. Limited partnership involves an agreement in which the
members will have limited authority in managing and
running the business. Most of the members act as an
investor rather than an owner. Depending on the terms
agreed upon, a member who has debts will not affect the
other members of the partneship. Instead, he or she will
lose his or her investment in the business.
Corporation is a group of people who contributes to the
business in the form of investments and capital. The people
under corporation is called shareholders. Each shareholder has
his or her own privileges and liabilities that are different from
the other members. A corporation is required to obtain the
filing of specific documents in the barangay, organizations, or
government for the business license and permits.
Unit 1: ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND ICTOcha
4. Cooperative is a nonprofit organization, which is operated by
the members of the organization. It is a group of people who
has the same mutual, social, economic, and cultural benefit,
or common goal. The group cares less for business gains and
is more focused on the benefits of the members. The group
should all agree with the decisions made in the organization.
Different Business Opportunities
A buy and sell business is the most common business, because it
circulates the production and equal distribution of goods or products in
the Philippines. Retail merchandising refers to the procedures in selling
goods directly to the customers through small amounts or quantities.
Here are the different kinds of retail stores.
1. Convenience store offers items that are daily needed by the
people. One good example is a sari-sari store. A sari-sari store
is a common start up business in the Philippines. It is normally
located at the house of the owner. The house owner makes use
of his or her garage or his or her front area for business. The store
sells items that sustains the daily needs of the customers, such
as detergents, soaps, shampoos, rice, condiments, candies,
soft drinks, crackers, and the like.
The goal of a sari-sari store is to provide the ease of
buying the basic daily needs of the residents near it. Retail
deals with the selling of goods or products to the customers in
small quantities for consumption. The term retailer pertains to
@ person who is an independent or dependent distributor and
who sells retail products to the public.
2. Department store offers different kinds of items or goods
distributed in different parts, corners, or sections of the store.
The store has different sections such as ladies’ section, men’s
section, and children's section. The store is usually placed in a
strategic location where the items are arranged properly and
evenly, and where the products are easily seen and found by
the customers. It has several counter areas, where the customers
pay the bills for their purchased items. Each counter area uses
a machine for easy storing of data and computation of items
for cash or card transactions.
16 HELE: Foundation of Life Skills 4Grocery store usually retails food items. The owner of the
grocery store is called the grocer. A large grocery store is called
a supermarket. In the United States, the area for fruits and
vegetables is called a produce market. In Britain, it is called as
greengrocers. Delicatessen pertains to an area of snacks and
sandwiches.
Drugstore sells medicine and other health products. Every
drugstore requires a pharmacist. A drugstore must have an
approval to operate from the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA). Some of the drugstores nowadays also sell items similar
to that of a grocery store, Items such as food, soap, and other
daily consumable products can also be found in a drugstore.
Bookstore sells books and other reading materials. Similar to a
drugstore, bookstores nowadays also offer other items such as
school and office supplies.
Fruit stand is very common in market places. It sells different
kinds of fruits and usually in retail.
Hardware store sells materials used for the construction of
buildings, houses, furniture, and the like. Some of the items are
nails, screws, paints, cement, woods, and tools. Majority of the
hardware stores offer deliveries of supplies for the convenience
of the customers.
BESMART.
The stories of famous and successful entrepreneurs can inspire and
touch the hearts of those who also have the same dream and passion
like them.
In order to become a successful entrepreneur, you must be positive,
hardworking, courageous, creative, helpful and supportive, healthy,
‘and quick thinker.
Retail is the process of selling goods directly fo the customers through
small amounts or quantities. Retailers are the ones who sell the
products to the customers.
