Items SDS Information

Physical State clear yellow gree liquid

Route of Exposure & Symptoms eyes, skin, inhalation,

ingestion

Protective Equipment All protective gear

First Aid Procedures Eyes

: Eyes should be
Immediately ushed with
plenty of water for at least
15 minutes, occasionally
liftinthe upper and lower
eyelids. Medical aid should
be summoned immediately
Skin
: Medical aid should be
summoned immediately.
The skin should be ushed
with plenty of water for
aleast 15 minutes while
removing contaminated
clothing and shoes.
Ingestion
: Vomiting should not be
induced. If victim is
conscious and alert, 2-4
cupfuls of milk or water
given and medical aid
should be provided
immediately.
Inhalation
: Medical aid should be
provided immediately. The
victim should be removed
from exposure anmoved to
fresh air immediately. If not
breathing, arti cial
respiration is provided and If
breathing is
difficusupportive oxygen
therapy is recommended.

Fire-fighting Measures

Self contained breathing
apparatus should be used
in pressure demand which
approved by the regulatory
authorities like MSHA (Mine
safety and Health
Administration) or
NISO(National Institute for
Occupational safety and
Health) along with
protective gear. During re
accidentinvolving regular
bleach toxic gases may be
released due to
decomposition or
combustion and hence, self
contained breathing
apparatus should be worn
to prevent exposure to toxic
gases
Extinguishing media: Water
spray, Dry chemical, carbon
dioxide, or appropriate foam
is used
NFPA (National Fire
Protection Association)
rating: Health -3, Instability-
1

Chemical Reactivity It shows incompatible

reactions with metals,
strong reducing agents,
strong acidamines,
ammonia, methanol,
ammonium salts,
phenylacetonitrile, formic
acid. It is to be avoided
witprolonged exposure to
light, combustible materials,
heat. Regular bleach
decompose slowly at
normtemperatures releasing
low concentrations of
corrosive chlorine gas
which is in uenced by
temperatureconcentration,
pH, ionic strength, exposure
to light and the presence of
metals

Safe Storage

Stored in a tightly closed
container. Store in a cool,
dry, well ventilated area
away fromincompatible
substances

Safe Disposal The disposal should comply

with 40 CFR (Code of
Federal regulations) parts
261.3 anthe disposal and
waste generators should be
consulting the state and
local hazardous waste
regulations

Environmental/ Ecotoxicity The spillage or drainage or

disposal of bleach should
bprevented. The bleach
should not be ushed into
surface waters or sanitary
sewer systems. The entry
intwatereways, sewers,
basements or con ned
areas is avoided to prevent
ecotoxicity.

Spill Cleanup Procedures The runoff into storm sewers

and ditches that lead to
water ways should
bavoided. The spillage
should be absorbed using
suitable absorbent, non
combustible materials such
aearth, sand or vermiculite.
Sawdust should not be
used as absorbent as it is
combustible. Ventilation
shoube provided to prevent
chlorine inhalation

Exercise 3

1. What are small-scale techniques?

Small-scale technique means a small quantity of chemicals that contribute to the safety of the experiments.
Instead of using big beaker of chemical, micro scale technique utilize small quantities ofchemical and scaled-
down science equipment.

2. List 5 precautions that must be taken before beginning an experiment.

Five precautions that must be taken before

beginning an experiment is read all information and instructions review the
related material safety data sheets, complete the Emergency Contact Card and
place it near your telephone, wear proper clothing and remove dangling jewelry
and tie back hair, wash hands carefully before and after handling laboratory
materials, and wear the safety gear.

3. As indicated in the video, what common substance can be used to neutralize a spilled acid?

As common substance that can be used to neutralize a spilled acid is sand or kitty
litter

4. According to the video, why should a used chemical container never be refilled?

A used chemical container should never be refilled

because used chemicals may be contaminated, and you could end up with an
unexpected and potentially unpleasant reaction.

5. Certain glass objects are not meant to be heated and could shatter if exposed to a heat source. What two examples
of heat-sensitive glassware are given in the video?

Two
examples of heat-sensitive glassware that are given in this video is graduated
cylinders and flasks
