1. Give two (2) definitions of leadership.
It is the art of inducing workmen to do their assigned work with zeal and confidence and the ability to persuade others to seek planned targets enthusiastically. It is also defined as the relationship in which one person influences the others to work together willingly on related tasks to attain the planned targets desired by the leader. 2. Four (4) main types of leadership styles. Autocratic leadership style Democratic leadership style Laissez-faire leadership style Transformational leadership style 3. Advantages, disadvantages and when to use the autocratic leadership style. The advantages of the autocratic leadership style are the following: faster decision-making, provides fast crisis management benefits, productivity level increases, and lastly, encourages better communication. On the other hand, the disadvantages are the following: lack of flexibility, low employee morale, can cause resentment of workers, and increase the work burden for the leader. Autocratic leadership style is helpful in dealing with crisis situations. They are well-equipped for situations like these as they can easily manage and has a quick decision making and their expertise and experiences can solve short-term issues. 4. Advantages, disadvantages and when to use the democratic leadership style. The advantages of the democratic leadership style are the following: it encourages creativity; it builds team-based relationships, encourages honesty within the workplace, and increases team knowledge. On the other hand, the disadvantages are the following: it can cause disharmony if it is misapplied, can sometimes encourage procrastination in the workplace, and can also encourage no one to take responsibility for a bad idea or a failure. Democratic leadership style works best in situations where group members are skilled and eager to share their knowledge as it fosters creativity and ideas and fits well with the current ideas of empowerment and engagement of workers.
5. Advantages, disadvantages and when to use the laissez-faire leadership style.
The advantages of the laissez-faire leadership style are the following: it allows team members to maximize their own leadership skills; it creates an environment of independence, and generates more individual satisfaction for the work being done. On the other hand, the disadvantages are the following: it downplays the role of the leader on the team, it lowers role awareness, it changes how accountability is assigned within the group, and also allows leaders to avoid leadership. A laissez-faire leadership style is helpful in a group that is outgoing because outgoing employees are more inclined to want leadership positions. Having multiple employee leaders due to this management style means they can put more collective effort towards solving problems, expediting tasks and progressing. The laissez-faire style can be used in situations where followers have a high level of passion and intrinsic motivation for their work.
6. Advantages, disadvantages and when to use the transformational leadership style.
The advantages of the transformational leadership style are the following: it keeps the company open, honest, and ethical, it encourages change by willing to adopt, improve and expand over time, transformational leader create enthusiasm, and lastly, it encourages ongoing learning and development. On the other hand, the disadvantages are the following: it can be risky and disruptive, it requires constant and consistent feedback, it puts increased pressure on team members, and can lead to employee burnout. Transformational leadership style works best in inspiring employees to look ahead with a focus on the greater good and to function as a single unit with a common goal in mind.
