Elizabethan drama followed the structure of the morality plays and of the medieval theatre, like: animated sermon,

a great realistic, mix comedy and tragedy, the idea of man’s place inside an ordered universe and the characters
are dominated by fate.
Elizabethan theatre also drew inspiration from: the Italian commedia dell’arte, the works of Nicolò Machiavelli, the
Greek theatre and the Latin poet and philosopher Seneca.
During this period drama became the main form of art, in fact he was custom in the communal life of towns and
villages and London was the most important city of entertainment.

The first theatre was built in the north of the walls of the City of London in 1576.
All of the theatre has the same open-air structure: we’re circolar or octagonal in shape with three different stage:
an apron stage with a trap door used for apparitions, disappearances and burials but sometimes the actors used
visual door because everything happen in front of the eyes of the spectator; an inner stage and finally the upper
stage that was hidden by a curtain, used usually by the musician or special things.
The normal spectators can stay in the pit and the rich nobles could stay in the galleries in which they are protect to
the sun or the rain and they can also sit.
There isn’t painted scenery and the scene are simple with few props, so the author can be freedom to create the
atmosphere.
The drama were play in the morning and usually in spring or summer when the time was good. People were
attracted by the performer and the ability of the actor, thanks to the good dialogue but also thanks to the great
costumes.
