1. Protocol - In computing, a protocol is a convention or standard that controls or enables the
connection, communication and data transfer between computing endpoints. In its simplest form, a
protocol can be defined as the rules governing the syntax, semantics and synchronization of
communication. Protocols may be implemented by hardware, software, or a combination of the two.
At the lowest level, a protocol defines the behavior of a hardware connection.

1. IP Protocol - This is the primary protocol used for communication data through a packet switched
internetwork using TCP/IP. Data is encapsulated into Binary (digital 1’s and 0’s) packet form and
transmitted through the physical layer, i.e. channel or permanent link.

Definitions
1. Ethernet over twisted pair refers to the use of a insulated copper twisted pair conductor in a multi pair
cable, for the physical layer of an Ethernet network (that is, a network in which the Ethernet protocol
is used in the data link layer). There are several different standards for a copper-based physical
medium.
2. The most widely used are 10BASE-T (10 Mbit/s full duplex), 100BASE-TX (100 Mbit/s full duplex),
1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet - 1000 Mbit/s full duplex) and 10,000BASE-T (10 Gigabit Ethernet –
10,000 Mbit/s full duplex).
