Pain gate theory

1. Substansia gelatinosa or Laminae II and III of dorsal horn will determine whether a sensory
mesg will reach the brain or will be blocked.
2. Pain msg that pass through the susbtantia gelatinosa will stimulate the T cells of dorsal horn
in the spinal cord and facilitate the msg transport to the brain.
3. The gate control theory state that non-painful stimuli can block the painful stimuli. (tkayah

Mechanism of pain gate theory

1. Painful stimuli will activate the nociceptors in the skin (pain receptors)
2. A-delta nerve fibre at PNS will be activated and then it will carry the pain msj towards the
spinal cord. (bright local pain)
3. C nerve fibre were also will be activated, also follow the same pathways.
4. Pain msj will go to the S.G and when the gate is opened, the pain msj will be sent to the T
cell.
5. T cell will transport the pain msj to the spinothalamic or spinorecticular tract in the spinal
cord.
6. Then, reticular formation is stimulated causing autonomic and sensory response to produce.
