DPP-4 Gauss’s Law (Board Previous Year Long Question )

Q.1 Using Gauss’s law prove that the electric field at a point due to a uniformly charged infinite plane sheet is
independent of the distance from it. How is the field directed if (i) the sheet is positively charged, (ii) negatively
charged?
Q.2 An infinitely long thin straight wire has a uniform linear charge density λ. Obtain the expression for the electric
field (E) at a point lying at a distance r from the wire, using Gauss’s law. Show graphically the variation of this electric
field E as a function of distance r from the wire?
Q.3 Using Gauss’s law, deduce the expression for the electric field due to a uniformly charged spherical conducting
shell of radius R at a point (i) outside and (ii) inside the shell. Plot a graph showing variation of electric field as a
function of r > R and r < R (r being the distance from the centre of the shell).
Q.4 Fig. shows a cylindrical Gaussian surface for an infinitely long thin straight wire of uniform linear charge
density? Answer the following :

(i) For which surface is the electric flux zero?


(ii) Over which surface is 𝐸⃗ zero?
(iii) Over which surface is |𝐸⃗| constant?
(iv) Over which surface does surface does |𝐸⃗ | change?
Q.5 A spherical rubber ballon carries a charge that is uniformly distributed over its surface. As the balloon is blown
up, how does E vary for points (i) inside the balloon. (ii) on the surface of the balloon and (iii) outside the balloon?
Q.6 A point charge +Q is placed at the centre O of an uncharged hollow spherical conductor of inner radius a and
outer radius b. Find the following: (a) The magnitude and sign of the charge induced on the inner and outer surfaces of
the conducting shell. (b) The magnitude of electric field vector at a distance (i) r = a/2 and (ii) r = 2b from the centre
of the shell?
Q.7 S1 annd S2 are two concentric spheres enclosing charges Q and 2Q respectively as shown in Fig
(i) What is the ratio of the electric flux through S 1 and S2?
(ii)How will the electric flux through the sphere S1 charge if a medium of dielectric constant ҡ is introduced in
the space inside S1 in place of air?
(iii)How will the electric flux through sphere S1 change, if a medium of dielectric constant ҡ is introduced in the
S2 in place of air?
Q.8 The electric field components in fig. are Ex = 𝛼𝑥1/2 in which 𝛼 = 800𝑁/𝐶m2. Calculate (i) the flux ∅E through
the cube. Assume that a = 0.1 m.

surfaces x = 0, x = a, y = 0 , y = a, z = 0 , z = a Take 𝐸0= 5 x 103 NC-1, a = 1cm and b = 2 cm.
Q.10 The electric field components due to a charge inside the cube of side 0.1 m are as shown; E x = 𝛼𝑥 where 𝛼 =
400N/C-m.
Calculate (i) the flux through the cube, and (ii) the charge inside the cube.

(iii) What is the net outward flux through the cylinder?
(iv) What is the net charge inside the cylinder?

Q.11 A uniform electric field 𝐸⃗ = 0 Ex𝑖̂ N/C for x<0 are given. A right circular cylinder of length l cm and radius r
cm has its centre at the origin and its axis along the x-axis. Find out the net outward flux. Using Gauss’s law write the
expression for the net charge within the cylinder?
Q.12 A hollow cylindrical box of length 1 m and area of cross-section 25 cm2 is placed in a three dimensional
coordinate system as shown in fig. The electric field in the region is given by 𝐸⃗ = 50x 𝑖̂, where E is in N/C and x is in
metres. Find (i) net flux through the cylinder, (ii)charge enclosed by the cylinder.

Q.13 (a). Define electric flux. Is it a scalar or a vector quantity? A point charge q is at a distance of d/2 directly above
the centre of a square of side d, as shown in fig. Use Gauss’s law to obtain the expression for the electric flux through
the square. (b). If the point charge is now moved to a distance d from the centre of the square and the side of the square
is doubled, explain how the electric flux will be affected.

Q.14 A wire AB of length L has linear charge density λ = kx, where x is measured from the end A of the wire. This
wire is enclosed by a Gaussian hollow surface. Find the expression for the electric flux through this surface?
Q.15 Use Gauss’s law to derive the expression for the electric field due to a straight uniformly charged infinite line of
charge density λ C/m.(b)Draw a graph to show the variation of E with perpendicular distance r from the line of
charge. (c) Find the work done in bringing a charge q from perpendicular distance r 1 to r2 (r2 > r1).
Q.16 An infinitely large thin plane sheet has a uniform surface charge density +𝜎. Obtain the expression for the
amount of work done in bringing a point charge q from infinity to a point, distance r, in front of the charged ne
sheet.
