In the Home: Jim Hedges World

Jim Hedges is a refined blend of Southern wit and Northern discernment. His Proustian recherche du temps perdu is rooted in Tennessee where he grew up and received his education. Author, hedge fund veteran, entrepreneur and most notably art collector, Jim has been recognized by Art & Antiques as one of the Top 100 Collectors in America. Today he devotes his time to Montage Finance, which he cofounded, offering discreet financing plans for collectors, dealers and auction houses and seeking out unique investment opportunities with artists, galleries and collectors. His further accolades include supporting and sponsoring several exhibitions including Sol LeWitt and Roni Horn, at The Whitney Museum of American Art, and, Richard Long and Sol LeWitt, at The Aspen Institute. He has also provided underwriting for monographs and publications on behalf of world-renowned artists including Robert Mangold: Paintings, 1990-2002 (Aspen Art Museum, 2003), Donald Judd (Tate, 2004), and, Sigmar Polke: Works on Paper (The Museum of Modern Art, 2002).

Jims collecting bug bit him with vintage photography in the late 80s and today his swollen troves include works from many contemporary art giants, including the likes of Roni Horn, I am deeply touched when confronted with the poetry, beauty and economy of Roni Horns gold leaf works. I particularly like her homage to Felix and Ross. He lives in a glorious West Village town house, with his partner Tom Delavan, the former editor of Domino, current Director of Gilt Home and one of the worlds pre-eminent authorities on interior design. Jim credits an early encounter chez Grandma as his first interaction with art, When I was 7 years old, my grandmother showed me a Sol Lewitt cube sculpture. It looked like a perfect place to store things. I would take the piece off the table, put it on the floor and use it as a garage for my Matchbox cars. About 30 years later, at a dinner party, I told Sol that I used to play with one of his sculptures as a child, and he was ecstatic. Jim continues to train his astute eye with privileged access into the inner sanctums of collectors, dealers and artists homes and studios, but it if given the choice to be locked in one art mecca, alone for one night, it is The Philip Johnson Glass House or The Foundation Maeght in Saint-Paul de Vence would be tops on my list. Skinny dipping at night in Philip Johnsons round pool could make The Glass House my first choice!
