2. Which of the following idea can be inferred from the paragraph, the headline and the
strapline are related to the topic?
Ans: You would need a very good reason to go to such a place.
3: what do you think that the writer begins her article like this?
In beginning the strapline is used which shows off the difficulty of the task and she wants to
develop the suspense, curiosity and the interest of the reader.

Q 1: Why does the first of the above two paragraph begin with question?
Ans: The writer alerts the reader’s mind to develop suspense, curiosity and the interest about the
context.
Q 2: What does the paragraph tells about the purpose of the expedition?
The purpose of expedition was not to have a leisure walk in park but to conserve the remaining
endangered species of snow leopard and to locate its habitat .

The temperature of Siberia is very low, there is no any sign of human life too far.

Tuva ended up with their lives due to extreme environment while trying to make it residential

2: Explain in your words the purpose of expedition?

This expedition was carried out to save the life of remaining endangered species of feline family

and to preserve their next generation by giving them suitable environment .

3: Explain why the volunteers were tired?

Due to extremely cold, harsh winter, high atmospheric pressure and altitude-addled lungs they

become tired.

4: Why do you think that the first snow leopard was not photographed until late 1970’s?

5: Explain what is meant by “armchair conservationists”?

Those conservationists who are only planning about the conservation of any habitat or any wild

life but they are untrained, unskilled, inexperienced. They do not know how risky this task is.

6: Explain what is meant by the sentence” this is not the cuddly side of the conservation

work”?

It means that conservation of snow leopard is not much easier as cat breeding at home.

7: Explain why the sighting of mountain snow leopards are so rare?

Because the temperature was not favorable to find sightings as it was 5-degree minus during

night and 30 degree during the day.

Q 1: Explain how the noun phrases in the example given below add to the reader’s

understanding of the nature of the expedition team?

EXAMPLE:

Not easy feat for a bunch of armchair conservationists with little or no scientific training.

It means that it is not easy for the people having knowledge but no any practical experience of

locating the habitat and finding the sightings of the snow leopard in such an extreme

environment of Siberian hilly area. This task cannot be completed without scientifically trained

people. This noun phrase tells about the nature of expedition team that they have skilled and
scientifically trained guides and experts with them who guide the other team fellows in searching

of snow leopard habitat and sightings.

Q 2: Explain how the adjective used add to the reader’s understandings of the text?

The adjective armchair which means “unexperienced, unskilled persons” and in the second noun

phrase “little or no scientific training” the adjective is scientific means “systematic and

methodical”. These adjectives mean that unexperienced and unskilled people cannot perform this

task of conservation of snow leopard, scientifically trained people can guide other people in the

team and carry out this task more efficiently.

Activity 13.1: Establishing tone


1 Q: What does this paragraph tell you about the writer as a person?
The paragraph tells us that the writer was in a holiday mood, nervous but pretending
confident ,drunk, flippant and wanted to enjoy the journey without any interruption.
2 Q: Which of the following words best describe the tone of the paragraph? Explain your
choice.
The word ‘flippant’ best describes the tone of paragraph, the word describes that the writer
was in a holiday mood and careless about everything that was happening around him. He was
teasing the stewardesses, he was unable to judge the severity of the situation as he was drunk
badly .The writer shows through his actions that nothing could interrupt his enjoyment.
3 Q: The writer says “he was in holiday mood”. what is his intention?
The writer wants to enjoy his journey without any interruption, he was drunk but confident
about what he is doing to enjoy himself and was completely in enjoyment mood.
4 Q: How does the phrase “something was up” suits the tone of paragraph?
The phrase” something was up” shows the change of mood of the writer towards some kind of
soberness. He felt that things were not going on well as he was expecting, he was drunk but he
realized that something had went wrong.

Activity 13.2: Predicting


Q: The title of the article is “emergency landing”.
How do you think that tone might change through the course of the article?
The title predicts that the tone might change from the enjoyment towards some kind of
nervousness and fearful situation, there may be some (technical or weather) problem in flight
which might end up in emergency landing.
A: preternatural:
Due to technical problems it was landing in an unusual way (terrifying and crashing).
B: inertia
This shows that during landing everything was still having no any movement, everything was
hanging in air and up lifting because of lack of gravity.
C: esprit de corps
This shows that people after coming out of the danger were behaving with each other in a
friendly atmosphere by helping and cooperating with each other.
D: vampire
To make the story horrible all the other writers use destructive (vampire) words but he
experienced it and remained safe during this without any safety measures.
E: newt
This shows that the writer was badly drunk, he was taking in whisky which is very strong so he
was out of his senses.

1 Q: With the reference to paragraph 2 explain:
a: how Amis felt?
Amis felt offended, curious, nervous, drunk and anxious .He wanted to drink but stewardesses
said that the bar services has been suspended.
b: how the stewardesses felt?
She felt something has went wrong with aeroplane. In this emergency situation, she hurried to
deal with the worried passengers. She was confident about how to deal with such situation.
2 Q: with the reference to paragraph 3 show how Amis conveys his attitude to the bomb?
He was internally scared when he thought about the bomb but pretended that he was not
afraid of any arriving danger.
3 Q: with the reference to paragraph 4 describe Amis attitude towards to the girl next to him
and explains the reason for this?
He was offering drink to the worried girl, annoying her, he wanted her to enjoy the situation as
he himself was enjoying.
4 Q: At the end of the paragraph 4 we get the first hint that Amis may have underestimated
the danger he was in explain the writer’s use of language in the final sentence?
For the first time, in the whole journey Amis felt that the situation was not much easy as he was
expecting, he felt the physical change in the unusual landing of the plane, there was some
technical problem with it. his mood was changed towards little seriousness.

The paragraph 5 shows those safety measures which are taken when the plane is landing but in
this case the plane is not landing in normal way, these safety measures “there will be more
than one bump don’t be alarmed by the reverse thrust. Leave all your hand baggage. Move as
quickly as u can to the exits ………” shows that there is very critical situationThe staff of the flight
is ensuring the safety of their passengers as soon as possible.
6 Q: what do you think that Amis thoughts turned to his family?
Due to critical condition of plane landing Amis missed his family at this point that thankfully
they were not with him because if they were he would had to worry for their safety.
7 Q: explain what effect is created by the choice of words in paragraph 7?
The physical disbalances caused due to technical error in plain are explained n this paragraph.
The writer lost his wallet in this chaos.
8 Q: explain why amis begin paragraph 8 with” my paramount concern at this point was, of
course, to find my wallet”. Why does this tell about the state of mind then?
The line shows the non seriousness of writer regarding current situation being drunk and
unable to judge current situation of danger and just worried to search for his wallet rather than
saving himself.

At Dinard Amis felt that he behaved well in this emergency situation, he was not afraid at all
like other passengers, he helped the injured people like a hero but the reality was opposite he
was nervous and afraid inside. At home, he was also numb he was thinking about the
enjoyment in the plane but his body was not supporting him. he was expecting some kind of
bravery written in the newspaper that should be associated with his behavior.

words that why he was wrong?
The writer was feeling like a hero who had come back through a testing time without any
scratch, but he was wrong because when he came back his body was trembling and was heated
up. He felt so weak and tired.

I think the writer was frightened and afraid of the situation internally but he did want to expose
this fear to all other passengers and stewardesses so he was nervous and trying to overcome
his fear. So he was behaving like this careless manner.

the word urgently explains that captain was going to deliver any critical announcement, the
necessary actions required to be taken to avoid any disaster. It gives us a clue towards the
seriousness of the situation.

The word relief explains the Amis’s feeling of gratitude that his wife and son was not with him.
he was feeling like a man free of worries and enjoying the journey without any care.
C: pressing
The word pressing explains that all the passengers were in hurry, there was a great rush of
people making the queue for going down to the aisle. everyone wanted to go down in the first
moment.
D: jeopardy
The word jeopardy describes of the great danger that the passengers faced in the emergency
landing of the plane and the problems they faced during getting down the aisle in the rush of
people.
E: camaraderie
The word camaraderie explains the feeling of friendship and peace that the Amis and other
passengers were feeling after coming out of the danger of landing the plane and feeling secure
now.

Explanation of the heading:
In the beginning of the journey the writer was in holiday mood. The writer didn’t realize the
emergency situation and kept his carelessness while the stewardess is taking necessary safety
measures. Due to technical error the plane’s route is shifted . When writer noticed the plane
had been physically disbalanced for sometime he sobers up a bit. Aeroplane staff advised safety
measures to passengers for safe landing. Writer was grateful that his family is not on oplane
otherwise he would had to care for them. The plane is now getting disbalanced again and again
due t which his wallet got lost and he is in search of it while people are worried for their lives.
Now he jumps from plane in a hurry and joins other passengers Some of them are injured but
now saved and secured from plane crash. People are discussing their experience about
emergency landing while writer is analyzing whether he was afraid or not. He felt himself as
abrave hero who had survived a great danger without any safety measures. But after comng
home he realized his body is trembling and was heated up. His body suffered a lot due to this
accident and being drunk . He was unwilling to accept his fear during fligh his wife consoled him
and told him that it was after shock condition . Now the writer has headed for another
adventure.

In the beginning the writer was in a holiday mood. he was offended about the suspension of
bar service. He was non serios about emergency landing and bomb. He became somewhat
serious after feeling physical change of landing. He was enjoying girl’s worry. He was feeling
relax of being not with his family. He was worried about wallet instead of his life. He was
feeling like a hero but he was frightened inside. He was disappointed nervous and not
confessing truth.
