Monopoly is a situation in a market where there is only one or a handful of companies that sell certain
products or commodities that have no similar substitutes and there are barriers for other companies or
entrepreneurs to enter the industry or business sector.

This is shown because PT. PLN is a single seller or producer, a product that is unique and without close
substitutes, and the ability to apply whatever price they want, and other traders cannot enter it.

EXAMPLE OF THE CASE OF THE MONOPOLY

PT function PLN as the generator, distribution and transmission of electricity began to be broken down.
The private sector is allowed to participate passively in efforts to generate electricity. Meanwhile, PT.
PLN. Currently there are 27 Independent Power Producers in Indonesia. They include Siemens, General
Electric, Enron, Mitsubishi,

Californian Energy, and many more. However, PT. PLN itself.

PT. State Electricity Company

(PT. PLN) enforces rotating power outages in various areas

including Jakarta and its surroundings, during the period 11-25 July 2008. This was exacerbated by the
shift of industrial working hours to Saturday and Sunday, once

a month. All industries in Java-Bali must comply, and sanctions will be imposed on them stubborn
industry. With classic reasons, PLN argued that the blackout was carried out due to a deficit in electric
power which was getting worse due to disruptions to the supply of coal from the main generator in the
electricity system.

CONCLUSION

It can be concluded that PT. Company

State Electricity (Persero) has done

monopoly action, which causes

loss to society. PT. This PLN has violated Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 5 of 1999 concerning
the Prohibition of Monopolistic Practices and Unfair Business Competition.
