. July 20th, 2011 When you hear the word literacy, what springs to mind? Chances are, not very much, because the term literacy doesnt readily evoke emotion, or images that bring it to life. Instead, it sounds vague, dry and impersonal; not a very juicy subject at all. And we might think of illiteracy as only a distant concern, one that is largely irrelevant at our local level in this day and age. But apparently not. Did you know that there is an Adult Learning Centre right here in Courtenay, serving adults who need help to improve their basic reading, writing, and math proficiency? The Centre has been operating since 1993, and meets a local demand by offering free tutoring by trained volunteers to anyone 19 years of age or older. Educators generally agree that reading proficiency is the key to success in all learning. Even with the latest technology, reading is still the dominant form of learning. Literacy is included in The Rotary Foundations six Areas of Focus. With a new Rotary year just starting, should this club consider how we might include a literacy project in our service activities during the next 12 months? Could we get creative enough to do something colourful, compelling even juicy?

Different Rotary clubs develop certain reputations over time. One club might generally be seen as too formal, or not very welcoming, while another becomes widely known as friendly. Of course the club itself isnt one way or another: Its the members who make it so. Clubs that have a reputation for being the most friendly, are the ones whose longtime members do the best job of interacting, especially with newer members and visitors, in five simple ways: Members are not only encouraged to but actually do sit at a different table each week. They also frequently make a point of sitting with a member they dont know very well, in addition to time spent with their familiar friends. Perhaps most importantly, they directly invite new members or visitors to join their table. (Otherwise, seeing the same faces at particular tables every week can easily make it seem to newcomers as though those seats are implicitly reserved for a certain crowd.) In the same spirit of inclusion, members do their best to open up conversation around the table, rather than just talking to the person next to them. And last but not least, they make a point of seeking out and getting acquainted with all members of the club. Doing these five things might mean venturing outside comfort zones, but members who decide to make the extra effort are the ones who make a friendly club.

Community Way dollars (cw$) are an instance of localised open money. It is a community currency issued by businesses when they donate cw$, not cash or goods, to community organizations or projects of their choice. These community organisations then exchange those cw$ with their members or networks, who in turn support both the organisation and local business. Good for community, good for business, its a win-win-win.
Open money is a means of exchange freely available to all. Any community, any association - indeed, any body - can have their own money. Open money is synonymous with LETS - an invitation to come inside and play, as in open door and open house; collaboration as in open hand and open for all; attitude as in open mind. The purpose of the open money project is to bring together and organize the people and resources necessary for the development and propagation of open money everywhere. The open money project remains a work in progress - a continuation of almost 25 years of LETSystem and community currencies development all over the world, two community way projects in Canada using smart cards, the Japan open money project, and, most recently, a community currencies services provider - ccsp. The intent is to develop an open money kernel - a core set of text files, administration tools and software systems that are sufficiently coherent and clear that further elaboration of the set derives from the core concepts themselves, rather than from the particular agendas of the originating writers and contributors. The open money kernel is to have a life of its own. For more information http://www.communityway.ca Many many thanks to Michael Linton and crew for this interesting presentation!
