Literature Review 3: Teaching with Respect by Stephen Sieck

Stephen Sieck is the Associate Professor and Co-director of Choral Studies at

Lawrence University. Sieck’s present research focuses on effective pedagogy for choral

teachers. In his book, Sieck explores Social-Emotional Learning, Inclusive Teaching

Practices, and asks deeper questions about the language used by teachers as it relates to

the identities of the students we are serving while providing a direct link to the choral

classroom. Sieck’s text will be used in my research to discuss the necessity of creating an

inclusive classroom that is welcoming and serves all students regardless of their

background or identity.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is defined by the Collaborative for Academic,

Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) as the process through which all young people

and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy

identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show

empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible

and caring decisions. Sieck provides many applications and approaches to SEL as it

applies to the music education classroom throughout his book. By cultivating a classroom

with a focus on SEL, Sieck indicates how we can create an environment of Inclusive

Teaching Practices (ITP) throughout all levels of education with specific application to

the choral classroom.
