Old Testament Reading: Numbers 21:4-9
From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the
people became impatient on the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, ‘Why
have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water,
and we detest this miserable food.’ Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and
they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, ‘We have
sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents
from us.’ So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Make a poisonous
serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.’ So Moses made
a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person
would look at the serpent of bronze and live.

New Testament Reading: Luke 14:27-33

Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you,
intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has
enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all
who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, “This fellow began to build and was not able to
finish.” Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and
consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with
twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and
asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give
up all your possessions.

Let us pray. O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone
astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace
and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the
Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lord God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ triumphed over the powers of death and prepared
for us our place in the new Jerusalem: Grant that we, who have this day given thanks for his
resurrection, may praise you in that City of which he is the light, and where he lives and reigns
for ever and ever. Amen.

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels
charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying,
soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen.

Closing Prayer: Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make
our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that
when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill
now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge
of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.
