Participation in Class Case Study Project EDP 202: Human

Development and Learning | University of Kentucky

What is the purpose of this project? A case study is a process or record of research in
which detailed consideration is given to the development of a particular person, group, or
situation over a period of time. Students in EDP 202 are learning about topics related to
human development and learning and their implications for teachers and learners in K-12
schools during the time of COVID-19. Students will complete a semester-long case study
assignment by using a variety of data collection methods to understand the experiences of
teachers and learners in Fall 2020 during the pandemic. By the end of the project, students
will be able to describe an individual’s in-depth experiences and perspectives involving
• delivery of
content,
• classroom
management,
• assessment of student
learning,
• learners’ social, emotional, and cognitive
development, and
• teacher and student
motivation.

Who will be doing the case study? Undergraduate students enrolled in EDP 202
(Human Development and Learning) supervised by Dr. Ellen Usher (ellen.usher@uky.edu;
859-257-8647).

What will be the time commitment of case study participants? Case study
participants will be contacted by the study at three time points across the Fall 2020
semester to share information about their experiences. A variety of methods can be
used to gather information for the case study, including (a) in-person or Zoom
interviews, (b) questionnaires, (c) classroom observations, and (d) examination of
documents (e.g., lesson plans, assignments). Participants are free to share as much or
as little information as they want.

Will the identity of case study participants be protected? Yes. Students will be required
to use a pseudonym when sharing with the class any information about their case study
subjects and related identifying information (e.g., school name). Only the student and
instructor will know the identity of case study subjects.
Is there any risk to participating? Participation in the case
study involves no more than minimal risk.

Who will see the results? Results of the case study project will be viewed only by the
course instructor for teaching purposes and discussed within the classroom for teaching and
learning purposes. All case study products will be de- identified and shared only internally
within our class. Results of the case study will not be made public through presentation or
publication.
